His capacity to drop deep to distribute the ball, move fluidly, contest, and advance at the correct time turns the Belgian into an apt answer for numerous problems in Manchester United's midfield.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United has activated the release clause worth €41 million in Tielemans' contract with Aston Villa. The Manchester club has also reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the Belgian midfielder.
Tielemans is expected to undergo a medical examination tomorrow. If no unforeseen issues arise, the deal will be completed quickly.
Manchester United's shift towards Tielemans came after the plan to sign Ederson from Atalanta was abandoned on Friday. Although not a heavily mentioned target at the start of the transfer window, the Aston Villa midfielder possesses qualities that are extremely well-suited to the problems Manchester United need to address in midfield.
Tielemans is a central midfielder who can adapt his duties depending on the phase of the match. When his team begins building from the back, the Belgian can drop deep to receive the ball from the defense, control the tempo, and bypass the opponent's first line of pressing.
He is not a midfielder who relies heavily on dribbling. Tielemans' strengths lie in his awareness, tidy ball handling, and choosing the right pass.
When Manchester United push higher up the pitch, Tielemans can operate as a box-to-box midfielder. He moves forward to support attacking players, appears in areas just outside the penalty box, and is ready to take shots from distance.
His ability to work vertically up and down the pitch makes Tielemans a link between defense and attack. This also helps relieve pressure on Bruno Fernandes, who often had to drop deep to receive the ball and orchestrate play for Manchester United.
Tielemans is often mentioned for his technique and passing, but his contributions without the ball are also notable.
Last season, no player in the group including Rodri, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Carlos Baleba, Moises Caicedo, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott, and Anton Stach made more tackles per game in the Premier League than Tielemans with 2.32 per match.
These are all midfielders highly regarded for their battling and control of the central area. More notably, the Belgian newcomer also ranks among the top 10% of midfielders in the Premier League in a range of metrics, including total tackles and interceptions, successful tackles, fouls won, through balls, forward passes, and passes into the final third.
These statistics show that Tielemans is not merely a playmaker. He is willing to press, contest, and disrupt the opponent's control. Tielemans does not have outstanding speed or physique. However, the Belgian relies on reading the game, positioning, and timing his interventions.
Therefore, although Tielemans is not a direct replacement for Casemiro, his ability to contest, recover the ball, and regulate play allows him to take on part of the workload left by the Brazilian.
Tielemans was not among the targets Manchester United pursued from the start of the transfer window. The Belgian only became a prominent option after the Ederson deal with Atalanta encountered obstacles.
Manchester United reportedly reached an agreement with Atalanta for an initial fee of around €40.5 million. However, issues related to the medical examination process forced the Old Trafford club to pause the deal.
In that context, Tielemans became a target that could be approached and finalized in a short time. The release clause in his contract meant Manchester United did not need to go through protracted negotiations with Aston Villa. Once Tielemans expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford, the Manchester club immediately gained an advantage to push the deal forward, even though manager Unai Emery still wanted to keep him.
At 29, Tielemans is older than most of the targets in Manchester United's long-term transfer plans. However, the Old Trafford club gets a player with several years of Premier League experience, who understands the intensity of the league and does not need much time to adapt.
The relatively low fee also leaves Manchester United with the ability to pursue other targets. Therefore, Tielemans does not necessarily have to be the final addition to the midfield.
This may not be a transfer that was part of the original plan. But in terms of ability and price, Tielemans fits many of the requirements Manchester United need to address.
The surprise of the deal does not mean it was a hasty choice. On the contrary, Tielemans could become one of Manchester United's most pragmatic and sensible signings of the summer.
