Mbappe points out the weakness that caused France to fall to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semifinal

Mbappe speaks frankly about France's weakness

After the match, Mbappe stated that his team was inferior to the opponent in both tactics and technical ability, while insisting that the squad must quickly recover from this shock.

Speaking to M6 after the game, Mbappe began with a candid self-assessment of France's performance.

"I think we did not play the match we wanted to, whether in terms of tactics, technique, or the overall quality we displayed. And when you fail to do what needs to be done in a World Cup semifinal, you cannot win," Mbappe declared.

The 27-year-old forward assessed that Spain executed their trademark style effectively, while France could not carry out their planned approach.

"Spain stayed true to their familiar style. They are a team that likes to control the ball and dictate the tempo of the game. Our goal was to apply high pressure to prevent them from establishing that slow but deceptive rhythm. Because in terms of controlling the game, they are better than us," Mbappe continued.

Mbappe believed that technical errors prevented the blue-shirted team from putting pressure on their opponents: "We failed to do that and made too many technical mistakes. We didn't know how to hurt them at the necessary moments. We should have been the ones to change the dynamics, but that's exactly where we fell short. What happened afterward was just a consequence of everything I've just said."

Delving deeper into tactics, the France captain pointed out issues in midfield and the pressing system: "From the start, we were always in a 2-vs-3 situation in the middle of the pitch. And against Spain, that is extremely difficult. Fabián Ruiz and Rodri had far too much time to handle the ball."

"We lacked communication in our pressing. In my opinion, when facing Spain, we should have played a man-to-man style, forcing them to run more alongside us," Mbappe added.

He also felt that France's ball-handling quality was not up to the standard required for a top-level match: "Even when we regained possession in the opponent's half, our first touches were not worthy of a World Cup semifinal. When all those factors combine, the result is a defeat."

Mbappe emphasized: "This is a huge disappointment. But if we look at it objectively, we did not do everything necessary to earn a place in the final."

Closing the interview, the forward born in 1998 shared his feelings after the World Cup dream was shattered, while affirming that the team would soon look to the future: "Like everyone, I am very disappointed. We dreamed of reaching the final, giving our country the chance to keep hoping and to make history."

"Now we have to face it with our heads held high. I don't think I can fully express the level of disappointment for myself or the whole team. But like any top-level player, even if it sounds a bit cliché, we will have to get up, take a break, and then move on. Football waits for no one. We will have to learn the lessons and start over to overcome this defeat," Mbappe affirmed.
