According to the schedule announced by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), the 2026 AFF Cup will take place from July 24 to August 26, 2026,right after the 2026 World Cup concludes. This is the first time since the 2000 AFF Cup that Southeast Asia's premier tournament returns to a summer time slot. Previously, the first two editions in 1996 and 1998 were held in August and September.
For over two decades, the AFF Cup was typically held at the end of the year to avoid clashing with domestic league schedules. However, with many Southeast Asian leagues shifting to a year-round format similar to Europe, the AFF had to adjust to keep up with the trend. The 2026 season is therefore especially significant as it simultaneously celebrates the tournament's 30th anniversary and opens a new chapter for regional football.
The draw placed Vietnam in Group A alongside Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, and East Timor. Meanwhile, Group B consists of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.
Under the format, teams play a single round-robin using a home-and-away model. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals, followed by home-and-away legs in the semifinals and final. Vietnam enters as the reigning champion after defeating Thailand in the 2024 ASEAN Cup final.
One point of confusion for fans in recent times is the emergence of a FIFA-organized tournament called the FIFA ASEAN Cup,which is completely separate from the traditional AFF Cup.
The AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) remains a tournament organized by the AFF, held every two years for Southeast Asian national teams. Although officially recognized by FIFA since 2024, it is not part of the FIFA Matchday calendar. This means clubs are not obligated to release players, often leaving many teams without their stars playing abroad.
In contrast, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is a new tournament directly initiated and organized by FIFA in collaboration with the AFC and AFF. It is scheduled to take place in September during FIFA Days.
Unlike the AFF Cup, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is on the official FIFA international match calendar, forcing clubs to release players for national team duty. This allows Southeast Asian teams to field their strongest lineups, including stars playing in Europe or East Asia.
In other words, the 2026 AFF Cup remains the region's long-standing traditional championship, while the FIFA ASEAN Cup is seen as a more internationally oriented competition backed directly by FIFA.
After 15 editions, Thailand remains the most successful team with seven titles. They are followed by Singapore (four), Vietnam (three), and Malaysia (one). At the 30-year milestone, the 2026 AFF Cup is expected to bring about a major transformation for Southeast Asian football, both in terms of technical quality and media appeal.
The shift in schedule, combined with the arrival of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, indicates that regional football is entering a new development phase with ambitions to elevate its status on the global football map.
