HAGL undergoes a complete overhaul, even the captain has to leave

Hoang Anh Gia Lai is making another big change to its roster with captain Jairo Rodrigues officially departing, marking the end of the total foreign player reshuffle before the 2026/27 V-League season.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai continues to create significant squad upheaval ahead of the 2026/27 V-League as central defender Jairo Rodrigues officially confirms his departure from the club after three seasons. Notably, the departure of the Brazilian player also concludes the process overhaul of all foreign players for the Mountain City team during this summer transfer window.

On July 15, on his personal page, Jairo posted a farewell message to HAGL along with thanks to the management, coaching staff, teammates, and fans who have always supported him throughout his time playing in Pleiku.

Joining HAGL from Khanh Hoa in September 2023, the 1992-born central defender quickly became an irreplaceable anchor in the defense. With his excellent situational reading, fiery playing style, and danger in set pieces, Jairo not only fulfilled his defensive duties well but also frequently contributed to the attack.

After three seasons wearing the jersey of the Mountain City team, the Brazilian foreign player made 92 appearances across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 6 assists. In the 2025/26 season, he was also entrusted by the coaching staff with the captain's armband, becoming a leader both on and off the pitch for HAGL.

Not only Jairo, but HAGL also parted ways with another important foreign player, midfielder Marciel. The Brazilian player has moved to join Ninh Binh even though he still had a contract with the Mountain City team. According to many sources, HAGL facilitated Marciel's search for a new challenge at a more ambitious club.

During two seasons playing in Pleiku, Marciel scored 6 goals and was regarded as the brain of HAGL's midfield. His ability to control the game, individual technique, and tactical thinking made him one of the most outstanding foreign players in the V-League in recent years.

Previously, HAGL also terminated contracts with Gabriel Conceicao and Junior Batista. The successive departures of Jairo and Marciel mean that all foreign players from last season have left the club. This is seen as a bold decision by Boss Duc and the management to refresh the squad after a disappointing season.

According to the plan, in July, HAGL will welcome three new foreign players to the Ham Rong Training Center for trials before finalizing the registration list for the 2026/27 V-League. These additions are expected to bring a new look to the club that once served as a launchpad for stars like Nguyen Cong Phuong, Luong Xuan Truong, and Nguyen Tuan Anh.

The comprehensive overhaul shows that HAGL is determined to build a more competitive squad for the new season. However, parting ways with experienced pillars like Jairo and Marciel also poses many challenges, as the Mountain City team will need time for the new recruits to integrate and make a difference.
