According to Al Jazeera, speaking at a press conference on July 17, Merino said: "It is a huge challenge, and at the same time a great source of motivation for me and the entire team."

The Spanish midfielder stated that facing Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, makes the final even more special.

"Playing against a team that has previously lifted this trophy makes the match even more meaningful. I am very happy to experience this moment," Merino shared with reporters at the Spanish national team's base in East Hanover, New Jersey (USA).

On the other side, captain Lionel Messi continues to be the key figure driving Argentina into the final. The 39-year-old forward provided two assists in the 2-1 victory over England in the semi-finals, helping the defending champions move one step closer to retaining their title.

With 8 goals, Messi is currently tied for the tournament's top scorer. Earlier, he was also the catalyst for a stunning comeback against Egypt in the round of 16, where Argentina scored three goals in the final 11 minutes to win 3-2 after trailing 0-2.

On the Spanish side, Merino has also left a strong impression on the journey to the final. The Arsenal midfielder has scored decisive goals in consecutive matches after coming off the bench, helping his team overcome Portugal in the round of 16 and Belgium in the quarter-finals.

"I always have great faith in myself and my abilities. Every time I step onto the pitch, I believe I can make a difference for the team," Merino said.

However, the 30-year-old midfielder stressed that the most important thing is not who becomes the hero.

"To be honest, who the hero is doesn't matter. What matters is that the team wins. A championship is the result of the collective effort, not just the 11 starting players," he emphasized.

Merino also praised Lamine Yamal, calling the 19-year-old an "impressive" talent. The upcoming final will mark the first time Yamal faces Messi, in a clash seen as a generational handover between two Barcelona stars.

Commenting on the match, Merino predicted it will be a fast-paced and intense contest, requiring the referee to control the tempo as well as the frequency of collisions and fouls.

"The faster we move the ball, the less time we give our opponents to commit fouls," he analyzed.

Recalling Spain's first World Cup title in 2010, Merino said he doesn't have many clear memories of that tournament, but he always holds special admiration for the generation of players who achieved that historic milestone.

"Today, wearing the national team jersey and continuing the role of inspiring the younger generation, the children watching us, is truly wonderful," Merino expressed.
