The 2026/27 preseason for Manchester United kicked off with a 0-1 loss to Wrexham during a friendly held at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium in Finland.
Coach Michael Carrick fielded a relatively strong lineup in the first half, including Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo, and Joshua Zirkzee. New signing Andrey Santos was also named in the starting eleven, marking his first appearance for Manchester United since his move to Old Trafford.
Despite boasting several big-name players, Manchester United started slowly and struggled against their opponents' tight play. Wrexham proved sharper from set pieces. In the 37th minute, a Mason Mount corner caused trouble for the Welsh side's goal as Sam Smith's header struck the crossbar.
However, just two minutes later, Smith himself opened the scoring. From a cleverly worked throw-in, Lewis O'Brien entered the box and played the ball through Maguire's legs. Sam Smith arrived at the far post to easily tap it past Tom Heaton.
After the break, Carrick made almost a complete substitution, giving opportunities to several young players. Harry Amass, Shea Lacey, Ethan Wheatley, Dan Gore, and Tyler Fletcher helped Manchester United become more proactive and maintained significant pressure on Wrexham's half.
Nevertheless, the red side still lacked precision in the final third. Wheatley had a notable chance but couldn't beat goalkeeper Danny Ward, while a dangerous cross from Amass was not capitalized on by his teammates.
Drama unfolded in stoppage time when Dan Gore went down in the Wrexham penalty area. Manchester United players appealed for a penalty, but the referee refused, sparking strong reactions from many fans.
The 0-1 defeat is not a disaster since it's only the first friendly, but the lack of ideas in the performance shows Carrick still has a lot of work to do ahead of the new season.
