Following his triumph at the 2026 World Cup, Marc Cucurella will join Real Madrid and is anticipated to be a key tool for Jose Mourinho in containing Lamine Yamal.
Jose Mourinho doesn't need to worry too much about how to fit together the attacking stars Real Madrid currently have – a problem that troubled Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Alvaro Arbeloa. His first challenge is how to stop Barcelona, the team that has dominated the last two seasons. Coincidentally, one of the best solutions may already be at hand: Marc Cucurella.
When leaving Chelsea to join Real Madrid, Cucurella brings the reputation of being one of the best left-backs in the world. He was a key factor in Spain's 2026 World Cup victory, with a knockout stage run in which he didn't allow any opponent to dribble past him. Cucurella's greatest strength lies not in overlapping runs or assists, but in his tenacity.
When asked about his secret for facing fast and technical wingers, Cucurella admitted that he always studies opponents before matches, but the most important thing is to create a constant feeling of being harassed. This way, he prevents them from having a comfortable game.
Cucurella and Lamine Yamal were two of the most important players for Spain under Luis de la Fuente, winning both EURO 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. Next season, they will be at the center of the La Liga and European football stage: directly facing each other on the pitch.
Last season, Chelsea beat Barca 3-0 in a match where Cucurella gave Lamine Yamal no chance to showcase his talent. He himself did not hesitate to call it one of his best defensive performances. "That's right. That day I didn't do anything special with the ball, but defensively I think I played very well." Yamal struggled. Jules Kounde scored an own goal.

That detail surely pleased Mourinho. Throughout his career, the Portuguese tactician has always highly valued players who can carry out tactical tasks, even if they are not the most prominent on the pitch. It was Mourinho himself who personally called to persuade Cucurella to join Real Madrid.
Mourinho was the one who found the solution to counter Pep Guardiola's tiki-taka during his first stint at Real Madrid. After a period of being dominated, the Royal club won the 2011-12 La Liga with a record 100 points and 121 goals, ending Barcelona's streak of dominance.
Now, the challenge is no longer Xavi, Iniesta, or Messi, but a new generation with Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Cubarsi, and a style of possession football still deeply rooted in Barcelona's DNA, led by a gegenpressing-schooled coach, Hansi Flick. Real Madrid have failed in two consecutive seasons, and with a chaotic dressing room, they have invited Mourinho back.
To beat Barcelona, one must first neutralize Yamal. Mourinho has an important solution for this difficult problem. In the past, Mou used Pepe to take on Messi. In his second tenure, he expects Cucurella to become the first line of defense against Yamal.
For Mourinho, Cucu is not just a left-back. Cucurella could be the most important piece in the battle to regain the upper hand over Barcelona.
