London big spenders unveil £185 million midfield duo, new signing instantly causes a stir with unbelievable wonder goal

Tottenham had their first outing with the costly midfield duo Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, with the Portuguese new boy netting the sole goal to secure a win over MK Dons.

Tottenham secured a 1-0 victory against MK Dons in a closed-door friendly at the Hotspur Way training ground. Although it was only a test match, the encounter drew significant attention as manager Roberto De Zerbi debuted the midfield pair worth a combined total of £185 million.

Mateus Fernandes, who recently joined from West Ham for £85 million, was deployed alongside the record signing Sandro Tonali in a two-man central midfield setup.

The new duo quickly helped Tottenham take complete control of the midfield area. Tonali handled the defensive duties, winning back possession, while Fernandes frequently received the ball and played passes directed forward.

The most memorable moment came when Fernandes picked up the ball outside the box and unleashed a powerful volley. The ball hit the post before going into the net, leaving the MK Dons goalkeeper with no chance to save it.

That was also the only goal of the match. Fernandes was immediately surrounded by his teammates in celebration after an impressive debut in a Tottenham shirt.

After the match, the 22-year-old midfielder could not hide his excitement when talking about his first wonder goal for his new team.

“That is the best goal of my career, far ahead of all the others. The second best was a strike from last season. I need to take more shots from outside the box because I know I can do it,”Fernandes shared.

Not only did he score, but Fernandes also impressed with his confident ball handling and willingness to play risky passes. Some situations lacked the necessary precision, but his forward-thinking mentality was seen as a positive sign for Tottenham.

Fernandes and Tonali both left the pitch at half-time. From that point onward, Tottenham gradually lost control of the game, highlighting the significant impact the new pairing has on the system De Zerbi is building.

Tottenham endured a difficult season, finishing 17th and fighting to avoid relegation. After De Zerbi was appointed late in the campaign, the North London club has undergone a major overhaul with a series of new signings including Tonali, Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dúbravka.

It was only a closed-door friendly, but the performance of the £185 million midfield duo has already given some hope for a completely different Tottenham look in the new season.
