Thailand's Olympic team is undaunted by Japan at the 2026 Asian Games.

Coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul discussed the results of the draw for the men's football tournament at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

Based on the draw results, the Thai Olympic team is placed in Group A alongside Japan, Kyrgyzstan, and Hong Kong (China). The teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with the top two securing spots in the semifinals.

"Regarding the draw, being grouped with Japan means we'll encounter a team of the highest caliber in Asia, the current U23 Asian champions. Kyrgyzstan and Hong Kong are also strong opponents. We need to thoroughly analyze their data and form, and prepare our lineup optimally, particularly in terms of player resources," Coach Wang began his remarks to the Thai media.

He added: "Over the past training sessions, the coaching staff has been keeping an eye on all players, including those who recently represented Thailand at the 2026 ASEAN Cup, and many others training with their clubs. The key priority at this stage is to evaluate the health and fitness of every individual."

We already have a preliminary preparation plan. During each training camp, the coaching staff works with the players who have been pre-registered. Next, we will have to finalize the 23-player squad. At present, we have been collaborating with the Football Association of Thailand and the clubs to summon players for the national team's participation in this ASIAD.

Naturally, our objective is to aim for the highest level, which is to advance as deep as possible in the competition. The crucial thing at this moment is to be well-prepared, as taking on an Asian champion like Japan is a massive challenge. The same goes for Hong Kong and Kyrgyzstan – we need to be meticulously prepared."

"As for physical fitness, I think there is little cause for concern since the tournament is at the beginning of the season, when players are already in good shape. If we have the full roster we want, after several training camps, the players will become more familiar with the team's tactics."

I want to send a word to Thai fans: please follow and support the team at the ASIAD in Nagoya. If you can come to the stadium in person to cheer them on, that would be truly fantastic. I hope you all will be with us and provide extra encouragement to the players."

The 20th Asian Games will be held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The men's football competition is open to players born on or after January 1, 2003, with each team allowed to register a maximum of three overage players.
