Lào vs Thailand, Group B ASEAN Cup (8:00 PM today): Questions for Coach Anthony Hudson

Lào vs Thailand, Group B ASEAN Cup 2026:All Thai supporters are looking forward to the debut of the "War Elephants" in the ASEAN Cup 2026, led by Coach Anthony Hudson.

Thailand's head coach Anthony Hudson will make his ASEAN Cup 2026 debut when the "War Elephants" face Lào in their opening match on July 25th away from home.

The replacement for Masatada Ishii

Anthony Hudson was appointed as Thailand's head coach in October 2025 after Masatada Ishii was dismissed. The 45-year-old coach has an impressive resume, which led the Football Association of Thailand to choose him for the "hot seat".

According to Main Stand, Anthony grew up under the pressure of the immense shadow cast by his father, Alan Hudson, a former Chelsea and Arsenal player. Trained at West Ham's academy, Anthony Hudson quickly realized that the expectations and constant comparisons caused him to lose his confidence. Unable to bear the psychological pressure, he retired at age 23. During that period, Hudson fell into alcohol addiction as he struggled through the crisis. The year 2005 marked a turning point when he completely gave up alcohol and decided to pursue a coaching career.

Anthony Hudson began his coaching career with youth teams in England and the United States, while also using his own money to undertake "apprenticeship" trips across Europe to observe the working methods of several top coaches, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Marcelo Bielsa. After gaining experience, he became head coach of Newport County in 2011 at age 30. Although he only stayed for five months, that first failure helped him mature and become more committed to the profession.

Hudson's career continued to develop as he worked with the Bahrain national team (2013-2014) and especially New Zealand (2014-2017), where he led the country's U17 and U20 teams to qualify for the Youth World Cup. Although he couldn't help the senior team overcome Peru in the intercontinental playoff for a World Cup spot, this period helped Hudson clearly define his coaching philosophy, aiming to create an active, modern style of play that suits the players' capabilities.

Coach Hudson has also led the U.S. U20 team, served as interim coach for the U.S. national team, worked in Qatar, and then moved to Thailand. The English coach took charge of BG Pathum United in 2025 before being appointed technical director of the Football Association of Thailand.

Professionally, Hudson pursues a direct style of football influenced by Marcelo Bielsa. This philosophy emphasizes an organized, disciplined, and high-intensity attacking game, requiring players to be brave and accept risks both with and without the ball.

Awaiting his debut at the ASEAN Cup 2026

In his role as Thailand's head coach, Hudson faces a major challenge replacing Masatada Ishii as the "War Elephants" compete fiercely for a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup. However, Coach Hudson later helped Thailand qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup with a 2-1 victory over Turkmenistan in March this year.

The English strategist is on a five-match unbeaten streak with the "War Elephants" since his debut match, a friendly win over Singapore in November 2025. In their most recent match, Coach Hudson helped the team draw 0-0 with China a month ago.

However, what has made Coach Hudson face skepticism is his call-up of too many veteran players to the Thai national team. Dangda, the 38-year-old striker, even started in the match against China, a typical example. Additionally, Coach Hudson called up 40-year-old winger Surachat Sareepim in the most recent FIFA Day period. Even in the victory over Turkmenistan, Hudson had to rely on players over 30, such as Theerathon Bunmathan and Manuel Bihr, to secure the win.

Former Thai player Sarayoot Chaikumdee once criticized Coach Hudson for failing to establish a clear playing style and lacking capability when the "War Elephants" were held to a 2-2 draw by Kuwait in a friendly in June. In that match, Thailand led 2-0 but allowed the opponent to equalize.

In the ASEAN Cup 2026, Coach Hudson will face a major challenge due to limited personnel options, as many clubs refused to release players. Compared to his predecessors, Hudson has a much weaker squad for the ASEAN Cup 2026, especially in the attacking line.

Now, people are waiting to see how Coach Hudson will manage with a squad combining older players and very young faces. The match against Lào will serve as a basis for evaluating Coach Hudson's professional capabilities, especially as he prepares for the Asian Cup next year.

The Thai national team is expected to win this match, and above all, Coach Hudson needs to lead the "War Elephants" to a convincing and impressive victory in his ASEAN Cup 2026 debut. Otherwise, it will be difficult for him to dispel the doubts about his abilities.
