The British "Manchester Evening News" revealed that Manchester United will make major changes to the squad this summer, and the departing players may easily exceed double digits. If there is no Champions League or even European qualification next season, Ruben Amorim's squad will need to be further streamlined and more players cleansed. It may be difficult for United to buy back the corresponding number of players after the purge, but Amorim can supplement it by using Academy players.
Four of Manchester United have confirmed their departure in the summer. 37-year-old veteran Evans and 38-year-old Tom Heaton are expected to retire, while 2 Nordic players, 33-year-old Eriksen and 30-year-old Lindelof, are both out of contract and the club have no plans to renew their contracts.
Evans has not started for United for four months after being hampered by injuries this season, with his last appearance coming on 18 December. Heaton, who turns 39 next month, has been largely a sparring partner at Manchester United and has been sidelined with injuries since February.
Eriksen recently confirmed that the club have never spoken to him about a contract extension, so he will be looking for a new club when his contract expires. Manchester United activated Lindelof's one-year priority clause last year and were going to sell him, but they couldn't sell him due to an injury to the Swedish Iceman, so they had to watch his contract expire and move for free.
Manchester United want to sell three wingers who are currently on loan Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony in order to raise funds for Ruben Amorim to bring in a new striker. Chelsea are obligated to buy Jadon Sancho for between £20 million and £25 million, but they also have the option of paying £5 million and returning the goods.
Marcus Rashford has a £40million buy-out option on his contract on loan at Aston Villa, with Unai Emery's side yet to decide on trigger. Antony's €100 million contract with La Liga Real Betis does not have a purchase clause, but the Brazilian winger's impressive performances could make him a source of buyers.
A major obstacle to the transfer of all three players is wages, with Marcus Rashford earning £325,000 a week, Jadon Sancho at over £250,000 and Antony at £200,000. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also looking to sell the team's highest-paid 33-year-old veteran, Casemiro, who earns £350,000 a week.
Marcus Rashford is a Manchester United Academy graduate and no matter how much money he sells, it's a net profit. The Red Devils brought in Casemiro for £60 million in 2022 and signed a four-year contract, meaning he would need to sell £15 million to avoid a paper loss. Antony joined for £81.3 million in the same year on a five-year contract, so United need to price him £32.52 million. Sancho's remaining transfer fee is £14.58 million, so a permanent £25 million move to Chelsea would be a good one for United.
While Rajae insists United will not be forced to sell players because of financial problems, the club will in fact consider selling Academy talents Garnacho and Kobe Meno. The 19-year-old has been blocked from renewing his contract by asking for more than £150,000 a week, but his contract runs until 2028 and Garnacho's until 2027, with the duo contingent on a suitable offer.
In the summer window last year, Manchester United earned £109.18 million in transfer fees through sales. Since 2022, the Reds' most lucrative sellers have been Academy players, including Andreas Pereira, James Garner, Anthony Elanga, Dean Henderson, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay.
Once Amorim brings in a new no.9, one of the existing players Zirkze and Hojlund is likely to be cleared. Zirkze was thought unworthy of Manchester United at the start of the season, but now he is playing well in the number 10 role, but the future of £72million centre-forward Hojlund is in jeopardy.
£60 million midfielder Mason Mount has played just 33 of his 98 games since joining United. However, Amorim believes that he is the right person to play in the 343 style and may therefore give him a "suspended sentence".
At the back, United are looking to buy out their loan left-back Terrell Malacia in the Eredivisie PSV Eindhoven, while Luke Shaw, who hasn't started for 13 months, may struggle to find a buyer, having made just nine appearances in the last 19 months.
Goalkeeper Altay Bayndir's future is uncertain and he will seek a move to play as Turkey's No. 1 at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Coupled with Heaton's retirement and Andre Onana's inconsistency, Amorim also wants to sign a new goalkeeper.
But if they don't qualify for Europe next season, United won't need as many players, with at least eight Champions League and Europa League group games, plus double-digit knockout rounds. The last time they missed a European competition, the Reds played just 44 games in 2014/15. By contrast, United have played 46 games so far this season, with at least 11 more to go, and a maximum of 14 games to play.
Manchester United have confirmed their departure list: Heaton, Evans, Lindelof, Eriksen; List of players for sale: Baindil, Malacia, Casemiro, Meno, Garnacho, Rashford, Antony, Sancho, Hojlund or Zirkze.
