Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim's summer transfer budget will be capped at the outcome of the Europa League final in Bilbao next week. The Daily Mail reports that if the Red Devils manage to win the title and qualify for the Champions League, he could double the amount of money available to him.
Manchester United currently sit 16th in the league, their worst record in the Premier League. Only a win in the Europa League final will allow them to play in Europe next season, and a defeat to Tottenham would not only result in a big four, but also a huge financial blow to miss out on the Champions League and any European competition.
Amorim has made it clear that the Europa League is not a major title for Manchester United, but the nearly £100 million in revenue from Champions League qualification is crucial for the club and owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. This will allow the Red Devils' financial situation to improve due to the increase in bonuses and broadcast revenue.
According to the Daily Mail, once Manchester United win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League, Rajue will spend £200 million in the summer. This will directly benefit Amorim, not only will he have the money to sign more players, but United will also become a more attractive club to attract star players who want to play in the Champions League.
But if they lose the Europa League final, the Reds will have an initial budget of just £100 million for this summer's transfer window, and will need to raise more money by selling players, and will not qualify for European competitions, which will seriously affect their ability to attract big names.
The Daily Mail's Ian Redman explained: "I've been told that Manchester United's budget is around £100 million, even if they don't qualify for the Champions League. That's why we see that they are already trying to bring in Cunha and Liam Delap. They can sign these two contracts even if they don't qualify for the Champions League, I've heard that's the case. But if United do qualify for the Champions League, they can invest another £100 million, so that two players can become four or five, which is half a team."
Cunha's transfer fee is expected to be £67 million, while Junior Drap has a £30 million relegation clause, and United will only need to use less than £100 million to bring in the two. The stats show that United have spent more than £100 million on five of the last six summer transfer windows, with 2020/21 being the only one to spend less.
So, even if Bilbao loses in the Europa League final, Amorim still has £100 million to buy, but he will need to look to sell the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho in order to continue buying and rebuilding the team.
However, if he wins the Europa League and gets twice the budget, Amorim will have bigger goals. David Ornstein of The Athletic says Manchester United are still interested in Portuguese sporting centre-forward Djekereish despite Arsenal being favourites.
According to rumours, Arsenal have reached a personal agreement with the 26-year-old and want to bring in from Portugal for 75 million euros. Still, Amorim wanted to try "cutting off the beard". Ornstein said: "Dzhecherish is a target for many clubs, Arsenal are serious about his interest and new sporting director Andrea Berta is a big fan of him. But United's Amorim also knows and loves it, having worked together at Sporting de Portugal."
In 2023, it was Amorim who spent £17 million to sign Djekereish from Coventry City in the Championship and made him a top goalscorer to watch in Europe, scoring 95 goals and providing 28 assists in 100 games. This season, Dzhecherish has scored 38 goals in 32 Portuguese league games and 52 goals in 50 games in all competitions, as well as 13 assists.
Interestingly, strikers such as Djekereish, Delap, Jonathan David, Ekitike or Sheshko have been the common targets of Premier League giants such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea who lack a number nine, and a change in their whereabouts could have a ripple effect on the future of several others.
