The Senegalese player, who transferred from Villarreal to the Blues, has now completed two seasons at Stamford Bridge, dazzling on the field with 30 goals and 12 assists in 80 matches across all competitions.
A highlight of his career was scoring a crucial goal in the UEFA Conference League final, showcasing his ability to perform on major occasions. However, recent disciplinary issues—two red cards in four matches—have attracted a wave of criticism.
His red cards against Newcastle United and Flamengo in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup have raised concerns about his discipline, leading fans and analysts to question his temperament. Some are now doubting whether he is a long-term fit for the London club.
Nevertheless, the former French international, who faced intense scrutiny during his own playing days at Stamford Bridge, emphasizes Jackson’s unselfish style.
"Of course he is performing well, yet everyone criticizes him. He is a striker who makes sacrifices for his team. I know him, I've experienced that," Makelele stated Flashscore.
"I know he’s a good lad, you see. Naturally, he requires support from another striker since he can't play every match. He wants to play for Chelsea, and for me, he is a valuable player."
Caicedo's talent in midfield
Makelele, widely recognized as one of the finest defensive midfielders of his era, played a pivotal role during Chelsea's golden period under Jose Mourinho.
After joining from Real Madrid in 2003, he became the cornerstone of a dominant team, aiding the club in securing consecutive Premier League titles (2004–05, 2005–06), an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Community Shield during his five-year tenure.
Given his legendary status and enduring impact on the modern holding midfielder role, Makelele was naturally asked about Moises Caicedo and his standing among the world's top midfielders.
Makelele commented on the Ecuadorian, who transferred to Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion:"The midfielders today are from a different generation, but I truly admire this young player for how he performs in his position.
"He’s always cheerful and consistently delivers strong performances for Chelsea. If he maintains this level of dedication and receives the right guidance within the team, I believe he can emerge as one of the best midfielders around.
"As we get to know him better, it’s evident he’s among the team’s top players, capable of defining his own role—because that’s what a true midfielder does."
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo has quickly become a vital part of the squad. Inspired by Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, he has adopted and refined the qualities of both players on the field.
Are Chelsea Premier League contenders?
Makelele also provided a balanced perspective on Chelsea’s chances for the Premier League title this season, emphasizing the need for patience and focus as the team strives to bounce back from a difficult campaign.
Last season, Enzo Maresca’s squad faced a tumultuous campaign marked by inconsistency and a series of injuries that disrupted their unity.
Despite these challenges and struggles to find a consistent rhythm on the field, they displayed resilience and ultimately achieved a hard-fought fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
When asked if their performance at the Club World Cup indicated a genuine challenge to teams like Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal for the 2025-26 title, the Frenchman replied: "I think it’s too early, you know.
"For now, I believe this team needs to finish this competition (Club World Cup) first, and then they will focus on the Premier League.
"The Premier League is extremely tough. It’s the most challenging competition in the world."
Chelsea will face Brazilian side Fluminense in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium, with the winner set to meet either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid in the final.
