Asante Kotoko reinforced their recent supremacy over their rivals Hearts of Oak by achieving a thrilling 2-1 comeback win in the 2025 President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The victory not only secured Kotoko their record-extending ninth President’s Cup title but also increased their unbeaten streak against Hearts to five matches, with the Porcupine Warriors recording four wins and one draw during this span.

Hearts of Oak took the lead in the 23rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive error as Hamza Issah found the net after a mistake from Kotoko’s goalkeeper.

Despite falling behind, Kotoko displayed determination and composure, staging a spirited comeback in the second half.

The equalizer came in the 51st minute through an own goal by Hearts defender Konadu Yiadom, who accidentally redirected a threatening cross into his own goal. Just a minute later, Kwame Opoku completed the comeback with a calm finish, sending Kotoko supporters into a frenzy.

Opoku and his teammates paid tribute to Diogo Jota by imitating his video game celebration.

Hearts pushed for a late equalizer, having a goal disallowed for offside and failing to convert a crucial penalty, but Kotoko’s defense remained solid to secure the win.

This victory is viewed as a significant psychological advantage as the Porcupine Warriors prepare for their return to continental competition in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Kotoko coach Abdul Karim Zito praised his team’s fighting spirit and emphasized the significance of the win for both the club and its fans.

There’s nothing more satisfying than defeating Hearts to bring joy to Kotoko supporters, especially in a final. This win completes our season and provides us with the right momentum for the Confederation Cup. We used the pain from previous losses as motivation, and today the players stepped up when it was most needed.”

Hearts coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, on the other hand, recognized Kotoko’s quality and stressed the need for ongoing improvement:

We attempted to implement an efficient training approach to prepare the players for this significant event. It’s a tough loss, but we must learn and work harder. The rivalry brings out the best in both teams, and we need to regroup for the challenges ahead.”

With the President’s Cup secured, Asante Kotoko will now turn their attention to the CAF Confederation Cup, with the preliminary stage set to begin next month.
