Despite facing a tough challenge, the pre-tournament favorites Spain secured their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Women's European Championship with a 2-0 victory over the hosts Switzerland, marking their fifth consecutive win against them.

With 14 goals scored across their three group matches and over 20 shots attempted in each, Spain were clear favorites against the hosts, who reached the knockout stage of a Euros for the first time and made history by naming three players aged 18 or younger in their starting lineup.

The game's dynamics were established right from the first minute as Spain easily circulated the ball, while Switzerland opted for long clearances to avoid danger. Continuous pressure from the Spanish team, especially from Aitana Bonmati, Claudia Pina, and Alexia Putellas, forced the Swiss to concede an early penalty, which Mariona Caldentey earned but ultimately missed, leading to chaos among the lively and supportive crowd at the Stadion Wankdorf.

A brilliant attacking move from Switzerland just before the 15-minute mark had Spain retreating, along with a powerful run into the box from Geraldine Reuteler, and a remarkable save from Livia Peng after a free-kick from Pina kept the score level as the first half neared its midpoint.

A more aggressive approach from the Swiss began to frustrate their illustrious opponents, and while Pina’s excellent dribbling was causing issues, there was surprisingly no end product for a team dominating possession.

A staggering 26 touches in Switzerland’s penalty area for La Roja without a goal was the highest recorded in a first half (since 2013), with Irene Paredes hitting the post as half-time approached.

A shot on target within the first 30 seconds of the second half indicated Spain’s determination, and their exceptional movement left the Swiss defense scrambling for extended periods. Despite their efforts, breaking through the hosts’ two defensive lines became increasingly challenging, with Reuteler putting in an outstanding performance.

A scramble in front of the goal at the hour mark saw Spain hit the woodwork twice in one play, and the pressure finally bore fruit in the 66th minute as Athenea del Castillo slid in the opening goal just four minutes after her substitution.

Pina then chose the perfect moment to unleash a signature curling shot into the top corner, doubling Spain’s lead and taking the game away from their determined opponents.

As the Swiss pushed forward in search of a goal, they left significant gaps across the pitch, although Spain was unable to extend their lead despite their best efforts, which included another penalty miss, this time by Putellas.

A red card in injury time for Noelle Maritz, who brought down Salma Paralluelo, only added to the Swiss difficulties. This victory marked Spain’s seventh win in their last 11 encounters with Switzerland, and they advance to the semi-finals, where they will face either France or Germanynext.

Despite a valiant effort, Switzerland must reflect on another defeat that brings the aggregate score of their last five encounters to a staggering 21-2.
