By the time Spain and Germany clash in the second of the two semi-finals in the Women's European Championship, they will already know if they will face England or Italy in the grand finale on Sunday.

Although Spain has long been viewed as one of the tournament favorites, they have never reached a final, while Germany has participated in nine - including seven of the last eight.

History favors Germany

If they were to meet England, it would be a repeat of the 2022 final where the Lionesses emerged victorious.

Luck also favors Christian Wuck's team, as they remain unbeaten against Spain in their last eight encounters (W5, D3), boasting a favorable goal difference of 18-3.

Indeed, in their last five meetings, the Spaniards have managed to score just one goal, remaining goalless in four of those matches.

Moreover, in their ten Women's Euro semi-finals to date, Germany has advanced in nine, with their only defeat occurring way back in 1993 on penalties against Italy.

In more recent times, the Germans secured victory in the bronze medal match against Spain at the Olympics and also won their encounter at Euro 2022.

Thus, despite the attacking flair that the Spaniards can and likely will showcase on Wednesday, Germany knows how to control the situation - as they have demonstrated repeatedly.

Both teams are in excellent form

The psychological aspect of the match could also come into play if Spain struggles as the game progresses into the later stages.

While both teams are in remarkable form, Germany was caught off guard by Sweden in the group stage, and that 4-1 loss resulted in a second-place finish.

It's a minor setback in an otherwise flawless recent record, while Spain aims to surpass that. Montse Tome's squad has won 12 of their last 13 international matches, scoring three or more goals in 10 of those victories.

Only in their 2-0 victory over tournament hosts Switzerland did they fail to score 3+ goals, though it should be noted that they missed two penalties in that game (Caldentey, Putellas).

It's an impressive and dominant streak that will be challenging to halt on Wednesday.

With Spain also being World Cup champions and Nations League victors, adding the Euros to their trophy cabinet holds significant prestige.

Suspensions for both teams

Regarding team news, Germany's Kathrin Hendrich is suspended following the red card she received in the quarter-final for pulling the hair of Griedge Mbock, and Sjoeke Nusken is also unavailable due to her second yellow card of the tournament.

Sarai Linder's ligament injury will prevent her from participating further in the tournament, and captain, Giulia Gwinn, will also miss the semi-final (and potential final) due to a serious knee injury sustained in the match against Poland.

For the Spanish, who have already matched their best performance at the Euros, Laia Aleixandri is also suspended after receiving a second yellow card of the tournament for a late tackle on Switzerland's Iman Beney.

Esther Gonzalez has been in exceptional scoring form, currently leading the charts with four goals, and with players likeClaudia Pina (two goals, two assists) and Alexia Putellas (three goals) also finding the net frequently, it appears that Germany may find themselves unusually on the defensive for extended periods in this match.

German counter-attack could stifle Spain's creativity

A 4-1-4-1 formation may therefore be likely, with two lines of four working together defensively and the wide midfielders able to move back and forth to contain Putellas and Aitana Bonmati in an attacking 4-3-3 from Spain.

Allowing any of the Spanish front six to find their rhythm, especially in the early stages, could be detrimental to Germany's chances of advancing, given that the players may already feel somewhat fatigued from their intense quarter-final against the French.

Don't be surprised if they adopt a more counter-attacking strategy than they are accustomed to as a result. This is because Spain has averaged over 70% possession in most of their matches, and Wuck cannot afford to let the game slip away from his players after they played for so long with one player down.

The energy expended in the quarter-final may very well be the key factor that ultimately gives Spain the advantage in a clash that is sure to require every player to leave everything on the field.

An unstoppable force encounters an unyielding object

We are likely to witness a match where the unstoppable force meets the unyielding object, making for an exciting viewing experience.

Germany's tournament experience has served them well thus far, but will they have enough to overcome the pain barrier against a team that will relentlessly press them for 90 minutes?
