The club has announced that young goalkeeper Elyh Harrison has joined League Two side Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan. Notably, another former Manchester United goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, was loaned to the same team for training during the 2017/2018 season. The career of former England international Joe Hart also began at Shrewsbury.
Harrison spent the first half of last season on loan at Chester City in the National League North, where he played every league match, keeping seven clean sheets in 18 starts, until he was recalled to Carrington in January. Ruben Amorim decided to bring Harrison back to serve as a backup for the U21 youth team and allowed him to train with the first team, even including him in the matchday squad for eight first-team games.
The 19-year-old Harrison joined Manchester United from Stevenage Town in 2022, winning the Reserve Team Player of the Year award a year later and signing a professional contract. He is considered one of the academy's standout goalkeepers, with a chance to become a first-team player in the future. The loan to Shrewsbury had been agreed for some time, but it was temporarily put on hold due to Andre Onana's injury; however, as Onana is currently recovering from a hamstring issue, the club decided to proceed with the loan.
Shrewsbury's head coach, Michael Appleton, is also a graduate of Manchester United's youth academy and a lifelong Red Devils fan. Like Harrison, Appleton won the club's Reserve Team Player of the Year award in the 1995/96 season. Unfortunately, during his time at the club, he only made two appearances for the first team before moving to Preston and West Bromwich Albion.
In addition to Harrison, Manchester United has loaned out several young players this summer: newly signed French forward Enzo Kanat-Biyik has joined Swiss side Lausanne Sports, center-back Sonny Aljofree has moved to Notts County, wing-back Habib Oguneye has joined Newport, midfielder Dan Gore has gone to Rotherham, and striker Joe Hugill has been loaned to Barnet.
Manchester United is currently looking to bring in a new goalkeeper and a new striker. It is certain that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS team do not intend to pursue Viktor Gyökeres. The Manchester Evening News reports that the club has no intention of making an offer for the 27-year-old Swedish forward. Although Amorim appreciates Gyökeres, the club's higher-ups do not endorse his actions and do not plan to make any offers.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated that Sporting CP has actively sought to promote Gyökeres to Manchester United through intermediaries, hoping to entice the Red Devils to outbid Arsenal. This is due to the legal disputes between Gyökeres and Sporting, as the club seeks to create as much trouble for Gyökeres as possible, expressing dissatisfaction with the player's agent, which has affected Arsenal's negotiations.
However, Manchester United does not plan to sign Gyökeres, and the player himself only wishes to join Arsenal. Premier League transfer expert Duncan Castles stated: "Last weekend, there were reports from Portugal suggesting that Manchester United had made an offer exceeding Arsenal's, and that Sporting was close to agreeing on a transfer fee with United. However, sources within Manchester United have told me that this is not true, and Gyökeres' associates have also emphasized that it is absolutely not true. Moreover, even if it were true, Gyökeres would not go to Manchester United; he has chosen to go to Arsenal and will continue to pursue that transfer."
Romano's claims are more definitive, stating that Gyökeres has told Sporting CP and Manchester United: "He wants to join Arsenal; that is his only thought, and he would even fight for it."
Another factor complicating Manchester United's deal for Gyökeres is that his Turkish agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, also represents Victor Lindelöf, who wishes to stay at Manchester United. However, the club has refused to extend his contract, so the agent does not support Gyökeres moving to Manchester United and suggests he only use them to drive up his price.
