The Swedish forward arrives with unfinished business, prepared to dispel any remaining doubts. But who is the individual behind the flurry of goals and the now-iconic masked celebration? What does his name reveal about his heritage? And perhaps most crucially, can he finally triumph in the Premier League?
Early debut and initial setbacks in England
Viktor Gyokeres was born in Stockholm in 1998. His football journey began at local club IFK Aspudden-Tellus. At the age of 14, he transitioned to the esteemed youth academy of IF Brommapojkarna, a club well-known in Sweden for nurturing young talent.
Just a few years later, at the age of 17, he made his senior debut in the Swedish second division (Superettan). By the 2017 season, he had emerged as the club’s leading scorer.
Gyokeres is familiar with English football, having played in the country previously when Arsenal came calling. Back in 2018, Brighton & Hove Albion secured the signing of the then-emerging teenage star.

However, despite the move to the Premier League, Gyokeres found first-team opportunities scarce at Brighton. He primarily played for the U23 team and made only a limited number of senior appearances in domestic cup competitions. It became evident that he required regular senior football to continue his development.
He subsequently moved to Coventry, another English club, before being signed by Sporting CP in Portugal.
Hungarian heritage and ice hockey
Gyokeres has Hungarian roots through his paternal grandfather, who emigrated from Hungary to Sweden during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. At that time, many Hungarians fled due to political turmoil and the Soviet invasion. Thus, Viktor holds dual citizenship in Sweden and Hungary.
The surname 'Gyokeres' translates to 'rooted' in Hungarian. It is pronounced 'Ye-ker-esh'.
Growing up in Sweden, he began playing both football and ice hockey at a very young age, but soon shifted his focus entirely to football.
The mask
After scoring, Gyokeres frequently celebrates by mimicking the act of putting on a mask – a gesture that has become his signature. While fans speculated about its meaning, the striker later disclosed the true inspiration in an Instagram post, captioned: "Nobody cared until I put on the mask."
The quote alludes to the iconic villain Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. Bane is recognized for his strength, presence, and intimidating mask. Similar to Bane, Gyokeres uses this gesture to convey power and command respect - both from the audience and his rivals.
The celebration adds a darker, more intimidating dimension to his persona. It serves as more than just a tribute; it conveys a message: "I’m here, and I’m unstoppable."
