The Irish forward Evan Ferguson has moved to AS Roma on a season-long loan from Brighton, as announced by the Serie A club on Wednesday. The 20-year-old aims to rejuvenate his career following a few disappointing seasons.

"Roma is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Evan Ferguson from Brighton. Ferguson will be joining Roma on loan with a purchase option," Roma stated in a press release.

Ferguson transferred to Brighton from the Irish club Bohemians in January 2021 at just 16 years old, making his senior debut that August under Graham Potter.

The 2022-23 season was pivotal for him, as Ferguson scored 10 goals in 25 matches across all competitions and earned his first senior cap for Ireland. However, injuries soon hindered his progress.

A torn cruciate ligament ended his 2023-24 season prematurely, during which he had scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United in September, but struggled to secure a regular starting position under Roberto De Zerbi.

Last season, after failing to impress the new Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler, Ferguson went on loan to West Ham United in February, making just one start in eight matches without scoring under former Brighton manager Potter.

Ferguson will now aim to regain his form under Roma's new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who previously turned Atalanta from relegation candidates into a top-four Serie A team — while also revitalizing the careers of many players.

Gasperini's history of transforming inconsistent forwards - including Duvan Zapata, Luis Muriel, Ademola Lookman and Gianluca Scamacca - into prolific goal scorers brings genuine optimism for Ferguson as he seeks a new beginning in the Italian capital.

There is certainly a lot of excitement in Rome regarding Ferguson's arrival, with Monday's Il Romanista newspaper showcasing the striker on the front page alongside the headline 'The Irishman'.

Ferguson appeared surprised on Sunday when he arrived at Ciampino airport, where a large crowd of Roma fans were already chanting his name and asking for autographs, all before he had even completed his medical examination or signed a contract.
