This marks the conclusion of an era for the Finland Women's national team, as their long-time captain and goalkeeper, Tinja-Riikka Korpela, has revealed her decision to retire from international competition.

The 39-year-old has made 128 appearances for The Boreal Owls, with her last match being a 3-0 victory over Hungary in the UEFA Women's Nations League.

Korpela was part of the Finland team that narrowly missed qualifying for the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025, although she did not play in her team's Group A matches.

After representing the national team at youth levels, Korpela made her senior debut in 2007 against Sweden, and by the time Finland hosted the Women's EURO 2009, she had established herself as the starting goalkeeper, helping the team reach the quarter-finals.

She also participated in the EUROs in 2013 and 2022, captaining the team in the latter tournament, just a year after achieving her 100th cap in a FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

“I have had the privilege of being part of this for a long time; 18 years with the women's national team and even more with the youth teams, so I have worn the Finland jersey for over 20 years. It has been an immense honor for me,” Korpela shared with the Finnish FA.

The veteran plans to keep playing at the club level. In 2024, she joined the Swiss team Servette, after having played for clubs such as Roma, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Bayern Munich.

“Now it's time to set my national team career aside. My body can no longer keep up with what my mind wants, and I can't accept that my body isn't cooperating,” she explained.

“I can assure you that the Boreal Owls will be in good hands moving forward. I'm confident we'll hear more about this team!”

“Thank you all. For everything,” she concluded.
