Italy coach Andrea Soncin found comfort in the sorrow after his team was just one minute away from the Euro 2025 final, stating it was a positive indication that they came so close before falling 2-1 to England in extra time on Tuesday.

"This is something that pains us, but we must take pride in what has been accomplished," he informed reporters. "The fact that we didn't make it to the final and were just a minute away is encouraging."

Italian midfielder Sofia Cantore expressed to Reuters that Le Azzurre's performance demonstrated the strength and development of the team.

"I believe we achieved something remarkable," Cantore stated. "Right now I'm feeling sad, but we carry with us the belief that we can be strong."

The last occasion Italy reached a Women's European Championship final was in 1997.

They seemed set to replicate that success when Juventus midfielder Barbara Bonansea scored in the 33rd minute at the Stade de Geneve. Italian supporters erupted in joy, with one proudly displaying a sign that read, "It's coming home to Rome."

However England's 19-year-old substitute Michelle Agyemang had other plans, equalizing in the 96th minute to push the match into extra time and ultimately shatter Italian hopes.

"There is much regret. We were a minute and a half away from the dream... Unfortunately, we were fatigued in the final," Elena Linari told Italian broadcaster RAI.

"I am proud of the girls. It is a bitter evening, but also a sweet one," she added.

The support Italy received from their fans throughout the tournament is something Cantore hopes will persist in the future.

"The fans need to stay close to us now, as they may be more aware of our strengths," she remarked.
