In the Premier League summer series where Manchester United defeated West Ham 2-1, the £71 million man Mbemo did not play, leaving over 80,000 spectators slightly disappointed. The club subsequently announced that due to fitness issues, Mbemo is likely to miss all three matches of the American tour.
Fans who left late from MetLife Stadium spotted Mbemo, as he trained post-match with other teammates who did not start. Meanwhile, a social media photo from teammate Amad Diallo showed that Manchester United had arranged a spot for the new signing in the locker room, sitting next to Amad.
Amorim did not completely rule out the possibility of Mbemo playing against Everton on Sunday, but it is more likely he will make his appearance after returning to England. If that happens, the Cameroonian winger's debut will be in the final warm-up match against Fiorentina at Old Trafford, where Manchester United legend De Gea is playing; this match is seen by Red Devils fans as his overdue "farewell match."
Mbemo completed his transfer just as Manchester United was flying to the US, with negotiations from Brentford dragging on for a month and a half. Consequently, his summer training was affected, as he only trained for a week while his teammates had already trained for three weeks. The 25-year-old Cameroonian international is not injured, but Amorim does not want to include him in the match squad just yet, as he is working to reach match fitness. A player typically reaches match fitness after three weeks of training, and Mbemo will hit that mark in time for the match against the "Viola."
Amorim stated, "Brian (Mbemo) started his training slowly, and he definitely won't participate in the next match (Thursday against Bournemouth in Chicago). We hope to use Brian in the final match, but he is still training, and we can only wait and see."
When discussing Mbemo and Cunha's integration with the team, Amorim said, "They are really humble. They know how to fit into the team and do not act like stars. They also understand that now is not the time to try to become stars. They are part of the team and also leaders in the locker room. Their contributions to the team and the way they interact with their teammates are enhancing our squad in every aspect."
The Manchester United coach then praised several players: "Everyone, I don't want to discuss specifics. Rasmus (Hojlund) played really well; I genuinely enjoy his game. He excels in one-on-one situations, especially when we have possession. He also has a great understanding with his teammates, so he did very well. Cunha is the type of player who can help us; he brings a lot to the team because he can carry the ball, which is a game-changing element that we lacked last year."
Amorim added, "In the first half, Kobe (Meno) and Manuel (Ugarte) played excellently. I don’t want to discuss the lineup for the second half, as it’s challenging to get 11 players on the field, many of whom are young. But I really like this team. Of course, you have to analyze the games and improve on certain aspects."
Currently, Manchester United has five players traveling with the team but not participating. Besides Mbemo, there is goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is recovering from a hamstring injury; right-back Mazraoui, who missed the match against West Ham due to a back injury; striker Čirković, who has missed the last two warm-up matches due to minor issues; and center-back Lisandro Martínez, who is a long-term injury absentee, having undergone surgery last season with no timetable for his return yet.
Manchester United will face Fiorentina in their final friendly match at Old Trafford on August 9, and just eight days later, the team will host Arsenal to kick off the new Premier League season.
