With Brian Brobbey and Josip Sutalo injured, Wout Weghorst and 17-year-old Aaron Bouwman were given starting positions in the attack and defense.
Raul Moro made his official debut for Ajax on the left flank, while Oscar Gloukh began the match on the bench. Defender Ko Itakura, who joined from Borussia Monchengladbach earlier that week, was not eligible as he awaited his work permit.
Telstar, playing their first Eredivisie match since 1978, chose to field five defenders and a front three, including Milan Zonneveld and Patrick Brouwer, who transferred from amateur team Quick Boys over the summer.

Early threat
After Wout Weghorst narrowly missed a well-placed cross from Raul Moro, the home team was fortunate not to concede early when Milan Zonneveld wasted a golden chance following a blunder by Aaron Bouwman.
After Youri Baas became the savior with a crucial block, the subsequent corner almost saw Telstar score again as Patrick Brouwer had one shot blocked and another hit the post off Wout Weghorst.
An exciting first half was opened up by Weghorst, who collected a deep pass from Steven Berghuis, evaded Guus Offerhaus, and went one-on-one with Ronald Koeman Jr. to finish cleanly for the 1-0 lead.

Ajax came dangerously close to making it 2-0 several times after Weghorst's goal, but after Steven Berghuis missed a header, Bertrand Traore squandered a major opportunity for Ajax, unable to decide whether to shoot or pass to Raul Moro, resulting in Koeman intervening.
Moro found himself in a similar position minutes later, but the Spaniard also failed to convert after his pass to Traore was intercepted by Tyrese Noslin.
As Telstar also found some opportunities in the dying moments of the first half, Soufiane Hetli had one last chance, but his attempt went wide.
Telstar remain active
Liverpool loanee Viteszlav Jaros demonstrated his value early in the second half by parrying a powerful header from Zonneveld. Jaros repeated this fifteen minutes later when Zonneveld tested the goalkeeper with a low shot, but could not surprise him sufficiently.
Running low on energy, Telstar had to focus on defense and nearly saw substitute Mika Godts score Ajax's second goal, but the Belgian winger was blocked by Koeman. Kenneth Taylor's attempt in the 72nd minute met the same fate as Koeman saved the midfielder's header.
Ajax's long wait for the second goal ended in the 83rd minute as Steven Berghuis and Wout Weghorst connected once more, this time during a corner, giving Ajax a 2-0 advantage.
With no further chances for either team, Ajax secured the 2-0 victory as they fought their way to success in their season opener. The Amsterdam giants will face Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer next week, with kickoff scheduled for 12:15 on Sunday, August 17th.
Telstar continues their first Eredivisie season in nearly 50 years with a home match against PEC Zwolle on Friday, August 15th.
