South Korean star Son Heung-min made his debut in Major League Soccer for Los Angeles FC on Saturday, injecting energy as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 tie against the Fire in Chicago.

Son earned a penalty in the 77th minute that his new teammate Denis Bouanga converted to secure the draw in the 81st minute -- VAR confirmed the penalty after the referee initially allowed play to continue.

"Clearly, there was contact and it was definitely a penalty; I have no doubts about that," Son stated, who was sent sprawling in the box by Carlos Teran after breaking free on a counterattack.

"We tied the game, but I believe we should have won, so I’m a bit disappointed."

Besides drawing the penalty, Son took three shots on goal - all of which were easily saved by Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady.

Son signed with LAFC on Wednesday for a reported MLS record transfer fee of $26 million after spending a decade with Tottenham in the Premier League - where he became a well-known figure.

The South Korean captain had announced just the previous Saturday in his home country that he would be leaving Spurs.

He left as Tottenham's fifth all-time leading goalscorer with 173 goals in 454 appearances.

Son's first opportunity to play in front of home fans in Los Angeles will be against Western Conference leaders San Diego on August 31.

However, many of his jerseys, South Korean flags, and signs welcoming him to MLS were seen around the Fire's SeatGeek Stadium, and cheers welcomed his entry in place of David Martinez in the 61st minute with the teams tied at 1-1.

Jonathan Bamba put Chicago ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute. Teran opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a header from a corner kick.

Nathan Ordaz played the ball forward for Son to sprint away. He had his first MLS goal in sight when he was fouled.

The penalty allowed LAFC to equalize for the second time.

Eight minutes later Ryan Hollingshead headed in from a corner kick to level the match at 1-1.

Son mentioned at his introductory press conference - attended by notable figures including Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass - that he felt fit and wanted to get on the field "as soon as possible."

He will have his next opportunity when LAFC, who moved up to fifth in the Western Conference, faces the New England Revolution next Saturday.

"It was a solid 30 minutes for me, so I’m preparing for next week," Son expressed.

"We'll see how I progress with training sessions and with the players, and we’ll determine if I can start next week and make a significant impact."

His arrival reunites him with former Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris, the French goalkeeper who stated that the South Korean will make a "big impact."

"It’s fantastic for the league, great for the city, great for the club,” Lloris remarked.
