Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester United’s Sancho has formally declined Roma’s personal contract offer. Earlier, United had agreed to a £20 million loan-to-buy deal with the Serie A club, but Sancho’s consent was necessary for the transfer to go through.
Roma has finalized the signing of right winger Leon Bailey from Aston Villa, but their efforts to bring in Sancho for the left wing have hit a snag. Romano stated, “Sancho’s agent informed Roma that they’ve decided not to accept the offer. Sancho wants to explore other club options, so Roma will now look for alternative targets.”
Reports suggest Sancho’s main reason for rejecting Roma is the low salary, which would have been only £80,000 to £100,000 per week; even Chelsea’s higher offer was turned down, despite being the club he supported as a child.
Another Italian transfer expert, Di Marzio, claims Roma will make another attempt tomorrow to change Sancho’s mind, but if unsuccessful, they’ll simply move on.
United has made it clear to Sancho that Roma’s offer is the only genuinely serious proposal. The new manager Gasperini has spoken directly with Sancho several times, hoping to convince him. The 67-year-old coach, who recently moved from Atalanta to Roma, is very eager to sign the 25-year-old English winger.
According to the UK’s Daily Mirror, Sancho has already rejected two potential transfer options. As one of United’s highest earners, he is unwilling to take a significant pay cut. Furthermore, the clubs most interested in him are not his preferred choices.
Recently, both Roma and Besiktas have offered him personal contracts. Besiktas is managed by Solskjaer, who brought Sancho to United from Dortmund for £73 million in 2021, but was dismissed just months later.
Spain’s AS reports that Besiktas is very confident about signing Sancho, even preparing an announcement video for his arrival! However, Sancho is reluctant to move to the Turkish Super Lig at this stage of his career, so he declined Besiktas’s offer as well.
Romano says Sancho has not negotiated with Besiktas, and that he’ll only consider Turkish offers after September 1, when the Western European transfer window closes but Turkish clubs can still sign players until September 15.
United remains determined to sell Sancho and will consider offers similar to Roma’s, or even lower, as long as Sancho agrees to leave. The “Big Joe” transfer is stalled due to personal terms, while “Little Joe” Garnacho hasn’t left for the opposite reason: he’s already agreed terms with Chelsea, but the Blues have yet to make a formal bid.
The UK’s Sun reports that Chelsea hasn’t sold French striker Nkunku yet, which is the main obstacle. They hope to sell him for £50 million to fund moves for both Garnacho and Xavi Simons. However, Bayern Munich has only proposed a loan, and no club is willing to pay such a high price for a player with frequent injuries.
Most believe that if Chelsea can sell Nkunku for £35 million, it would be a success, and they might bring in Garnacho from United for a similar fee. Since the 21-year-old only wants to move to Stamford Bridge, all parties are left waiting.
Garnacho was left out of Argentina’s World Cup qualifying squad for next month, but this hasn’t changed his transfer stance. His relationship with United has completely broken down, and on Sunday, Red Devils fans vandalized a Garnacho mural near Old Trafford.
Whether Garnacho leaves or not is crucial for United’s further signings, as he’s a homegrown player and any transfer fee would count as pure profit, helping Amorim continue to strengthen the squad.
