‘Against’ Barcelona, the President of La Liga faces the possibility of immediate dismissal

The Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) is currently reviewing a petition to dismiss La Liga President Javier Tebas after multiple allegations of “grave misconduct” involving leaks of Barcelona’s financial and internal affairs.

On August 12, Miguel Angel Galan – President of the Association for Transparency and Democracy in Sports and also head of CENAFE (National Center for Football Coaching Training) – officially submitted a request to CSD. In this document, Galan called for Javier Tebas to be removed from his position as La Liga President, citing five extremely serious breaches under Article 76.2.a) of Sports Law No. 10/1990, particularly regarding the duty to remain neutral.

The accusations center on Tebas repeatedly leaking sensitive information about Barcelona without the club’s consent. The first instance occurred on April 2, when La Liga announced it would block Barca’s €100 million “VIP Box” deal, despite previously approving it in December. Barcelona’s internal audit report was made public, then had to be removed from La Liga’s official website.

Additionally, Galan accused Tebas of communicating with Athletic Club Bilbao, sharing details about Barcelona’s finances related to Nico Williams’ release clause. Tebas was also alleged to have publicly stated that Barca “is no longer bound by 1-1 Financial Fair Play rules”, which negatively impacted the club’s reputation.

Another incident involved Tebas revealing the contents of a letter sent to CSD on March 28 regarding Dani Olmo’s contract dispute. According to Galan, all these actions have harmed Barcelona both financially and reputationally.

This is not the first time Javier Tebas has come under scrutiny. Previously, in 2024, he was publicly reprimanded by the Administrative Sports Court (TAD) for controversial remarks. This time, if CSD refers the case to TAD, Tebas could face disciplinary proceedings, ranging from official sanctions to the possible removal of his status as La Liga President.

The case is attracting significant attention because it not only directly affects Javier Tebas personally but could also reshape the governance of Spanish football. With Barcelona repeatedly voicing opposition to his leadership, the pressure on Tebas continues to mount. The final decision remains with the CSD, which has the authority to determine whether he will continue as President or be forced to step down after nearly a decade in charge of La Liga.
