The 2025 US Open mixed doubles has officially started, with the semifinal lineup decided on the first day.

On August 19 local time, the 2025 US Open mixed doubles tournament began at Flushing Meadows. The matches are scheduled alongside the singles qualifiers, and the entry list includes top-ranked players and Grand Slam winners, with leading singles players joining forces.

Raducanu/Alcaraz

After claiming victory at the Cincinnati Masters on Monday, Alcaraz wasted no time traveling to the US Open for the mixed doubles event. The partnership between Alcaraz and Raducanu drew significant attention, and their first-round match played to a packed house. Although they lost 2-4, 2-4 to the top seeds Pegula/Draper in the opening round, their impressive points throughout the match were met with enthusiastic applause.

“In February and March this year, we shared our plans with several agents and players,” said Eric Butorac, the driving force behind the US Open mixed doubles format reform. “We tried not to get involved in pairing up the players. We reached out to Carlos (Alcaraz)’s team to explain the format, and his agent said he was very interested. I think it was less than three days before they called back and said, ‘His partner will be Emma (Raducanu).’ So we had nothing to do with the pairing.”

Swiatek/Ruud

Cincinnati singles champion Swiatek appeared as expected, teaming up with Ruud to reach the semifinals. After the match, Ruud commented that they were prepared from the start for the possibility that one of them would do well in Cincinnati and face a tough choice. “Ultimately, it was her (Swiatek)’s decision to play, which was impressive because she only arrived at her New York hotel 12 hours ago, slept, and was warming up at 10 AM. Now she’s here competing.”

Sinner, who withdrew from the Cincinnati final due to illness, also pulled out of the US Open mixed doubles. He was originally set to play with Navarro, but since Navarro opted for this week’s tour event, Sinner’s new partner was Siniakova. With Sinner’s withdrawal, Siniakova also missed out, and their spot was taken by the local duo Collins/Harrison as a last-minute pairing.

Defending champions Errani/Vavassori

With many top singles players entering the draw, defending champions Errani/Vavassori needed a wildcard to participate this year, while more doubles specialists missed out. When the US Open announced the changes to the mixed doubles format, this pair expressed their dissatisfaction publicly. After winning, they stated: “Doubles tactics are very important; there are many strong singles players here, but we train together often and communicate both on and off the court, which matters. We are also fighting for all the doubles players who couldn’t play mixed doubles, and we’ll do our best.”

During the first day’s opening round and quarterfinals, top seeds Pegula/Draper, third seeds Swiatek/Ruud, Collins/Harrison, and defending champions Errani/Vavassori each won two consecutive matches to advance to the semifinals. Early tomorrow morning Beijing time, the semifinals and final will be held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the US Open mixed doubles champions will be crowned!
