Bu Yunchaokete defeated Tsitsipas, Sinner withdrew from mixed doubles with Siniakova, three Chinese players achieved complete victories, and French ace Monfils pulled out of the US Open.

Three minutes a day to keep up with everything happening in tennis. Hello to all tennis fans! Today is Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Welcome to the midday news from Tennis Home.

Earlier this morning Beijing time, the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open held its second round of singles matches. In a highly anticipated showdown, China's top player Bu Yunchaokete delivered an outstanding performance, defeating top seed and Greek star Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-2 to advance in style. Next, he will face Argentine Navone for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Bu Yunchaokete's impressive play was clear, but Tsitsipas’s poor form was also evident. Over two sets, the Greek star committed 33 unforced errors, struggling badly from the baseline. Is Tsitsipas on the decline? Meanwhile, Munar, Van de Zandschulp, Baez, Darderi, Kecmanovic, Medjedovic, Fucsovics, and A-Muller all secured wins to move forward.

WTA 250 Cleveland Open: In the second round of singles, Germany’s Lys defeated Russia’s Kudermetova Jr. 6-4, 6-3; Russia’s Zakharova knocked out American Baptiste 6-4, 6-3; other matches were postponed due to rain. After reaching the third round, Lys announced her withdrawal due to injury, so Zakharova advanced directly to the semifinals.

Women’s doubles: In the first round, Wang Yafan/Aoyama Shuko narrowly lost 5-7, 6-7 to Dediuk/Skoc, exiting in their debut match.

WTA 500 Monterrey Open: In the first round of singles, American Parks, Croatian youngster Luzic, Italian Cocciaretto, and Slovakian Slamkova all defeated their opponents and moved on to the next round.

Now let’s turn to the US Open. Last night Beijing time, the 2025 US Open mixed doubles began. After two rounds in one day, the semifinal matchups are set. Top seeds Pegula/Draper and third seeds Swiatek/Ruud both scored back-to-back wins to reach the semifinals, while the other two spots went to Collins/Harrison and Errani/Vavassori.

World No.1 Sinner, who was supposed to partner Czech star Siniakova in mixed doubles, withdrew before the start, leaving Siniakova unable to compete once again. Previously, she criticized the US Open organizers for turning this year’s mixed doubles into an exhibition and for denying other top-ranked doubles players their opportunities.

Let’s look at the US Open singles qualifiers. Last night and this morning Beijing time, the three Chinese players in the first qualifying round all won and advanced together. Wu Yibing beat Argentina’s Ficovich 6-3, 6-3 and will face France’s Van Assche in round two; Zhang Shuai won 7-5, 6-3 against local wildcard Stoyana and will play Czech Vidmanova next; Wei Sijia swept Turkey’s Cengiz 6-2, 6-2 to move on as well.

Next, let’s check the Laver Cup. Last night Beijing time, the ATP Laver Cup lineup for this season was announced. Team World will be led by American legend Agassi, with Fritz, Shelton, Tommy Paul, Tiafoe, F-Cerundolo, and Fonseca as members; Team Europe, captained by France’s Noah, features Alcaraz, Zverev Jr., Rune, Ruud, Mensik, and Cobolli. The event will take place September 19–21 in San Francisco, USA.

In other news, French ace Monfils announced on social media last night that he is withdrawing from this year’s US Open due to an ongoing back injury.

Finally, here’s a guessing game: In the photo below, a player wears a headpiece given by fans. No hints—can you identify who he is?

No one got the correct answer in last week’s guessing game. The person in the picture was actually American star Collins.
