Following his Cincinnati setback, Jannik Sinner is set to rest for several days before attempting to defend his US Open title as the number one seed. In contrast, Djokovic is seeded all the way down at seventh.
The Italian star overcame Taylor Fritz in last year’s men’s singles final. Although he is currently unwell, he remains a top favorite in New York. Sinner’s main challenger is Carlos Alcaraz, the new Cincinnati Open champion and world No. 2, who previously won the US Open in 2022 and is eager to bounce back after a surprising early exit in 2024.
Trailing Sinner and Alcaraz are Alexander Zverev (ATP No. 3) and Taylor Fritz (ATP No. 4), both hungry for their first Grand Slam trophy. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, absent from competition since Wimbledon, holds the seventh seed in New York. It’s been two years since Djokovic captured his 24th Grand Slam, most recently at the 2023 US Open.
Unlike the two top contenders Sinner and Alcaraz, Djokovic is seeded only seventh
In the women’s tournament, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, still searching for her first Grand Slam of 2025, will be the number one seed. The Belarusian overcame Jessica Pegula in last year’s thrilling final and aims to become the first woman since Serena Williams (2012–14) to successfully defend the US Open.
Swiatek’s triumph at the Cincinnati Open has moved her ahead of Gauff, reclaiming the world No. 2 ranking and the second seed. Meanwhile, Gauff may face either Sabalenka or Swiatek in the semifinals.
