On August 20 local time, continued rainfall interrupted the US Open qualifiers after just 45 minutes, leading to the cancellation of all matches. As a result, the second-round matches for Wu Yibing, Sun Fajing, Wang Xiyu, Zhang Shuai, and Wei Sijia were all rescheduled to Thursday.
With the roof closed at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the mixed doubles semifinals and final were held as scheduled in the evening. In the first semifinal, Swiatek/Ruud came from behind to defeat top seeds Pegula/Draper 3-5, 5-3, 10-8. In the second semifinal, the Italian pair Errani/Vavassori overcame Collins/Harris with a 4-2, 4-2 win.
Vavassori/Errani Successfully Defend US Open Mixed Doubles Title
Errani and Vavassori narrowly secured their title defense in the final, beating Swiatek/Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 and earning a $1 million prize. As doubles specialists, Errani and Vavassori defeated four pairs—Rybakina/Fritz, Muchova/Rublev, Collins/Harrison, and Swiatek/Ruud—on their way to capturing their third Grand Slam mixed doubles trophy together at this year’s US Open.
