This leading tennis athlete is making adjustments to her team as she targets victory at the 2025 US Open, the last Grand Slam event of the year.
Just days before beginning her campaign at the US Open—the year's final Grand Slam—world number 3 Coco Gauff made a significant coaching change by parting ways with coach Matt Daly.
Gauff will continue working with long-time coach Jean-Christophe Faurel, while also adding biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan to her coaching staff. MacMillan was seen with the 21-year-old during a training session at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (New York) on Tuesday (August 19, Vietnam time), just days before the US Open kicks off.
MacMillan is a well-known figure in the tennis world. He previously worked with Aryna Sabalenka, helping the world number 1 overcome serving issues in 2022 and improve her forehand. For Gauff, bringing MacMillan on board is seen as a necessary step after she repeatedly struggled with her serve, especially at the Rogers Cup earlier this August, where she committed 42 double faults in just three matches.
Coach Matt Daly confirmed his departure after more than a year with the team. He joined Gauff’s camp last autumn, following her split with Brad Gilbert. During his tenure, Daly focused on changing Gauff’s grip and refining her technique, leading to immediate success: Gauff won the China Open, ended 2024 with a WTA Finals title, and secured her second Grand Slam at Roland Garros 2025.
However, the young American has shown inconsistency since her clay-court Major triumph. Since her victory in Paris, Gauff has only won four matches and was a major disappointment when she exited Wimbledon in the first round.
Currently, Coco Gauff has not made any public comments regarding the changes to her coaching staff. She is expected to take part in an exhibition match at Arthur Ashe Stadium before officially starting her US Open campaign—the tournament where she claimed the title two years ago.
