Novak Djokovic faces a Vietnamese-American player in the opening match of the 2025 US Open.
Nole has been placed in a relatively favorable draw for a deep run at the 2025 US Open.
On the evening of August 21st, Vietnam time, the organizers of the final Grand Slam of the year — the 2025 US Open — conducted the draw for the tournament's main draw. Accordingly, Novak Djokovic’s first-round opponent will be the young American player of Vietnamese descent, Learner Tien.
Learner Tien is one of the most closely watched young talents in the current tennis world. Although he does not possess an exceptional serve or overwhelming physical strength, his smart, versatile playing style and ability to exploit opponents’ weaknesses have helped him advance far this season.
The 19-year-old player has broken into the top 50, currently ranked 48th — the highest ranking of his career. He also holds an impressive 4-1 record against top 10 players this year, a feat few have achieved.
Learner Tien and Novak Djokovic have never met before. Tien’s tricky counterpunching style promises to pose a tough challenge for Nole in the opening round of the US Open.
If Djokovic manages to get past Learner Tien, his path looks quite favorable at least until the quarterfinals, where potential opponents include a yet-to-be-determined qualifier, Alex Michelsen, or Frances Tiafoe. In the last eight, the Grand Slam record-holder is likely to face Taylor Fritz or young star Jakub Mensik — who defeated Nole in the Miami Open final.
Djokovic’s biggest rival in this section of the draw is Carlos Alcaraz, who is striving to win his first US Open title since 2022.
Djokovic has had a relatively successful 2025 season, especially considering age is increasingly affecting his movement. The Serbian player captured an ATP Tour title in Geneva; reached the semifinals of the first three Grand Slams of the year — Australian Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon; and finished runner-up at the Miami Open.
When maintaining good momentum, Djokovic remains a formidable opponent for today’s younger players, even when facing rivals like Carlos Alcaraz.
