The US Open has finally started, and the opening two days promise many exciting matches worth anticipating.
Earlier, the mixed doubles at the US Open acted as a prelude to the main event. The duo of Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, always smiling, was particularly popular among fans and celebrated as a youthful story. But now, they are set to engage in the serious singles matches.
Former US Open champion Raducanu and Alcaraz are both star players scheduled to appear as headliners at Flushing Meadows this Sunday and Monday, with their popularity at an all-time high.
Match time and venue: Sunday, first match at Louis Armstrong Stadium
The British No.1 singles player said that compared to the last two years, her form and mindset have improved significantly, and she openly expressed her hopes for a breakthrough at this US Open. In an interview with Sky Sports, she stated:
“I feel more relaxed and happier now than I was four years ago. Off the court, I still enjoy playing tennis, training, competing, and the process of continuous improvement — in that sense, I haven’t changed much. The difference is that now I understand that anything is possible. When I won in 2021, I wasn’t aware of the potential negative emotions in this world, nor did I expect anyone would try to undermine others.”
“Those negative factors affected me a lot in the past few years. Even now, they sometimes bother me, but overall, I can enjoy every moment more — having great people around me and being in this position in my tennis career makes me truly happy.”
Raducanu’s early weeks working with new coach Roig have been productive, helping her prepare for the US Open with a positive mindset. Additionally, her first-round draw is very favorable: the 22-year-old unseeded player avoids top-ranked opponents and will face Japanese player Ena Shibahara.
Last year, Raducanu defeated Shibahara in straight sets. In New York, she is expected to be significantly stronger than her opponent.
Prediction: Raducanu wins in straight sets
Match time and venue: Sunday, first night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium
Djokovic faces unprecedented uncertainty in his opening round at the US Open.
Since narrowly advancing to the Wimbledon semifinals over a month ago (against Jannik Sinner), Djokovic has not competed in any tournaments. There are doubts about whether he has fully regained form and can pursue a record 25th Grand Slam title.
After such a long break, Djokovic’s form may be rusty. If he is not at his best, Tien, with her versatile style and solid technique, has a real chance to take control.
Prediction: Djokovic wins in four sets but starts the match under pressure.
Match time and venue: Monday, second night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium
This draw is a “nightmare” scenario for Alcaraz.
The tall Opelka poses a threat to any opponent, especially in the first round of a Grand Slam when players tend to be nervous.
Opelka’s powerful serve means the outcome of the first two sets could come down to just a few critical points. Alcaraz is likely to drop one or two sets in this match.
Although Alcaraz is expected to advance in the end, under the night lights, he would certainly prefer a less challenging first-round opponent.
Prediction: Alcaraz loses the first set but ultimately wins in four or five sets.
