2025 US Open: Chinese Team Loses All Four Matches on Opening Day

On August 24 local time, the 2025 US Open main draw began, with all four Chinese competitors on that day regrettably losing and being eliminated in the opening round of singles.

Wang Yafan

Wang Yafan, who played the third match on the Grandstand Court, had a chance to serve out the first set but failed to convert three set points, eventually falling 6-7(9)/3-6 to the local star and 10th seed Navarro. Last year at the US Open, Wang reached the fourth round, marking her first time in the Grand Slam round of 16. After failing to defend those points this year, her current ranking has dropped out of the top 300. Wang will also team up with Japanese player Shuko Aoyama to compete in the women's doubles event.

Zhang Shuai

Zhang Shuai, who closed the day on Court 17, faced Swiss star Belinda Bencic in a rematch after 12 years and lost 3-6/3-6. Zhang advanced through qualifying to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam singles event for the 49th time in her career at this US Open. She is also set to compete in the women's doubles alongside Alexandra Panova.

Wang Xiyu

Also coming through qualifying, Wang Xiyu was defeated 4-6/3-6 by the 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko, marking her third loss against this Grand Slam champion.

Zhu Lin

Zhu Lin battled Potapova for 2 hours and 3 minutes but eventually lost 4-6/6-4/2-6, ending her campaign in the first round.
