Djokovic’s victory raises concerns, Medvedev’s fate hangs by a thread, all four Chinese female players are out, while two Southeast Asian women show fierce form.

Just three minutes daily to catch up on global tennis news. Hello tennis fans, today is Monday, August 25, 2025. Welcome to the midday news report brought to you by Tennis Home.

Let’s start with the US Open. The 2025 US Open singles main draw kicked off last night Beijing time. In the men’s singles lower half first round, most high-ranked players playing on day one secured wins. In a highlight match that ended this morning Beijing time, No. 7 seed and Serbian star Djokovic, despite wasting a match point on his serve, defeated local player Lener-Chien 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2, marking his 19th consecutive US Open main draw first-round win. Next, he will face another local player, qualifier Schwaida.

Although he won in straight sets, Djokovic showed signs of physical strain in the second set and even called for a physiotherapist. His visibly poor condition could pose risks for upcoming matches.

No. 4 seed and top American Fritz advanced smoothly by defeating fellow countryman wildcard Nava 7-5, 6-2, 6-3; No. 21 seed Czech player Machac cruised past Italy’s Nardi 6-3, 6-1, 6-1; seeds Shelton, Menchik, Fucikova, Lehecka, and Darderi also won to reach round two; however, No. 29 seed and Dutch top player Griekspoor suffered a shocking 5-7, 4-6, 0-6 defeat to French veteran Mannarino, exiting in the first round; other winners advancing include Brown, Kym, Busta, Echeverri, Lindgren, and Spizzirri.

In another key match this morning Beijing time, Russian star Medvedev faced strong resistance from Frenchman Bonzi and fell behind 0-2 in sets. Medvedev fought back to narrowly take the third set tiebreak 7-5. The match was still ongoing at the time of reporting.

On the women’s side: All four Chinese female players who competed in the first round lost and none advanced. Wang Xiyu was defeated 4-6, 3-6 by 25th seed Ostapenko; Wang Yafan lost 6-7(9), 3-6 to last year’s semifinalist and 10th seed Navarro; Zhang Shuai went down 3-6, 3-6 to 16th seed Bencic; Zhu Lin fell 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Russian rising star Potapova.

Top seed Sabalenka began her title defense with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Swiss player Masarova. She will next face Russia’s Kudermetova; No. 4 seed Pegula beat Egypt’s Sherif 6-0, 6-4 to advance and will meet Russian Blinkova in round two; No. 7 seed Boulter defeated qualifier Ajava 6-2, 7-6(4) for a strong start.

Former champion and Britain’s top player Raducanu cruised past Japanese qualifier Shibahara 6-1, 6-2 for a successful opener. Other winners moving on include Sun Lulu, Uchijima, Vondrousova, Kessler, Fernandez, Valentova, and Azarenka.

In two other matches, two Southeast Asian female players performed impressively, both winning and making history. Philippine No. 1 Iera defeated 14th seed and Danish rising star Tauson 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(11), earning her first grand slam main draw win. Iera thus became the first Filipino player in the Open Era to claim a grand slam singles main draw victory.

Indonesian qualifier Janis upset 24th seed and Russian star Kudermetova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, marking her first career win over a top-30 player and her first grand slam main draw victory. She is the first Indonesian woman to win a US Open main draw match since compatriot Huang Yilin in 2002, ending a 23-year drought.

Finally, let’s play a guessing game. The picture below shows a player training. Without any hints, can you identify who it is?

Last time’s guess was answered correctly by some fans. That’s right, the person in the picture is Chinese female player Guo Hanyu.
