While competing, Masha stood out as one of the most beloved female tennis players internationally, admired for both her skill and striking appearance.
The former top female tennis star, Maria Sharapova, was formally inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame last weekend alongside the legendary twin duo Bob and Mike Bryan — the greatest men's doubles players in history.
Sharapova made history as one of the rare female players to complete a personal Grand Slam collection. She reached the pinnacle at Wimbledon 2004 at just 17 years old after a stunning victory over Serena Williams. Later, the Russian player went on to win the US Open 2006, Australian Open 2008, and twice claimed the Roland Garros title in 2012 and 2014.
Masha was also the first Russian female tennis player to hold the world No. 1 ranking and played a crucial role in leading her national team to victory in the 2008 Billie Jean King Cup. At the 2012 London Olympics, she earned a silver medal in singles, narrowly losing to Serena Williams in the final.
Beyond her achievements on the court, Sharapova was a familiar face in advertising campaigns, graced fashion magazine covers, and ranked among the highest-earning female athletes globally.
However, her career also faced many ups and downs. Shoulder surgeries and a 15-month suspension in 2016 due to a positive doping test cast shadows. Nevertheless, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later confirmed that Masha did not intentionally use banned substances. In 2020, she decided to retire, closing the chapter on her elite competitive career.
"You realize you are just a small part of the grand history of this sport. That feeling is truly special.", Sharapova stated at Newport, USA last weekend.
Alongside Sharapova, this year’s induction also honored Bob and Mike Bryan — the pair holding 16 men’s doubles Grand Slam titles and a record 438 weeks as world No. 1. Mike Bryan boasts a total of 18 major titles, including two won with partner Jack Sock.
The Bryan brothers also helped the US team win the 2007 Davis Cup and secured Olympic gold in men’s doubles at London 2012.
