Daniil Medvedev has maintained his poor performance streak over the last two years and shows no indication of turning it around.
In a thrilling and dramatic match that electrified the crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Benjamin Bonzi caused a major upset by defeating former champion Daniil Medvedev in five sets (6-3; 7-5; 6-7; 0-6; 6-4) in the opening round of the 2025 US Open this morning, August 25, Vietnam time.
Fueled by confidence from his previous victory over Medvedev at Wimbledon 2025 nearly two months ago, Bonzi started strong, using his powerful serve and forehand to dominate the physically demanding defensive playstyle of his opponent, winning the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead.
The French player even had the chance to close out the match early with a crucial break-point in game 9 of the third set and later faced a match-point in the deciding service game. However, it was at this moment that the intense drama between Bonzi and Medvedev peaked.
During Bonzi's serve, a photographer unexpectedly entered the court area, and umpire Greg Allensworth allowed Bonzi to retake his first serve. This decision angered Medvedev, who argued that Bonzi should only be allowed a second serve since the photographer interfered after the serve had been completed.
Medvedev then reacted in a way that stirred the crowd at Louis Armstrong, who sided with him. Whistles and criticism of the umpire filled the arena, causing the match to pause for nearly 10 minutes before Bonzi resumed his interrupted service game.

The match between Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi descended into chaos.
Medvedev’s psychological tactic worked effectively. Bonzi became noticeably nervous, allowing Medvedev to break back and take the third set. The Frenchman then lost the fourth set 0-6 and even requested medical assistance—a move seemingly strategic as he had completely lost his composure.
In the fifth set, both players maintained a tight contest with multiple break-point exchanges, neither willing to lose their service games. The turning point came in game 7 of the final set when Bonzi saved five break-points to hold serve, earning loud support from the crowd.
Though his speed declined due to fatigue, Bonzi still wielded powerful shots that troubled Medvedev. After a series of excellent plays, the 29-year-old capitalized on his second match-point in game 10, securing a hard-fought victory after 3 hours and 46 minutes.
Thus, Benjamin Bonzi has won all three of their Grand Slam encounters. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev could only blame himself for missing many opportunities in the decisive set. After the match, Medvedev smashed his racket, shed tears, and sat in shock before leaving the court.
This victory advances Bonzi to the second round of this year’s US Open, where he will face Marcos Giron, who also endured a tough match against Mariano Navone.
