Carlos Alcaraz began the 2025 US Open convincingly with a 3-0 victory over Reilly Opelka, continuing his undefeated run in Grand Slam first-round matches to 19.
Carlos Alcaraz appeared at this year’s US Open with a fresh look, sporting a shaved head on Arthur Ashe Court, sparking great curiosity among fans. However, the real focus was on the world No. 2’s performance as he beat Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in just over two hours of play.
Facing an opponent with powerful serves, Alcaraz demonstrated resilience and superiority through his comprehensive, solid, and highly effective gameplay.
Throughout the match, the 22-year-old Spaniard did not lose a single service game, saved three break points, and broke Opelka’s serve three times. He recorded 23 winners, committed only 17 unforced errors, and achieved an impressive first-serve win rate of 50 out of 58 points.
Opelka served 14 aces but couldn’t trouble Alcaraz, who is known for his excellent return game. The difference was Alcaraz’s ability to maintain constant pressure and make decisive plays at critical moments, keeping control of the match.
The victory over Opelka not only advanced Alcaraz to the second round but also extended his unbeaten record in Grand Slam opening matches to 19-0. This milestone has only been achieved before in the Open Era by Bjorn Borg and Rafael Nadal.
“Opelka is a very tough opponent, his powerful serves made it difficult for me to find my rhythm. I just tried to return well and extend rallies to regain my feel. It was a tough first-round match, but I’m happy with how I controlled the game,” Alcaraz said after the match.
Alcaraz’s goal at this year’s US Open is not only to chase his sixth Grand Slam title but also to compete for the world No. 1 ranking against Jannik Sinner. However, the young player emphasized that he doesn’t put much pressure on ranking points and focuses on playing his best tennis. “I try not to think too much about being No. 1. What I want is to go as far as possible in this tournament and enjoy every match,” Alcaraz stated.
In the second round, Alcaraz will face Italian player Mattia Bellucci, an opponent he has never met at the Tour level. With steady form and high spirits after his opening win, Alcaraz remains a strong contender for the title at Flushing Meadows.
