Carlos Alcaraz revealed that the buzz cut he is currently wearing at the 2025 US Open actually resulted from an error made by his brother while cutting his hair before the event.
The new haircut quickly became a talking point at Flushing Meadows on the second day of competition, as the Spanish second seed easily beat Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to move into round two.
"I felt my hair had grown too long, and before the tournament I just wanted to cut it a little shorter," the 22-year-old tennis player shared with the media. "Surprisingly, my brother used the clippers the wrong way. He cut it incorrectly, and the only solution was to shave it all off. To be honest, I don’t think it looks too bad."
Alcaraz ended up shaving his head due to a mistake made by his brother
Previously, Alcaraz had his personal barber Victor Martinez fly from Spain to Paris during Roland Garros to style a fashionable fade haircut, but this time he said New York was too far to do the same. The world No. 2 admitted the new hairstyle has received mixed reactions, but he said he can only smile at those responses.
When asked if having a neater haircut helps him move faster on the court, Alcaraz admitted it’s hard to say for sure. He also mentioned that it won’t matter for long since his hair grows very quickly. "Whenever I get a haircut, it only takes 2 or 3 days to grow back," Alcaraz said. "In three days, everyone will see a different hairstyle again."
