Swiatek sets a unique record after her first-round victory at the 2025 US Open

The accolades continue to grow for tennis star Iga Swiatek, as the Polish athlete has just added another shining milestone to her remarkable career following her first-round victory at the 2025 US Open.

Swiatek breaks Monica Seles’s record

In the opening round of the 2025 US Open on Arthur Ashe Center Court, Swiatek faced Colombian player Emiliana Arango. The former champion swiftly concluded the match, winning decisively 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour, advancing directly to the second round.

This emphatic victory not only allowed Swiatek to start her campaign with an impressive display, fueling hopes of winning the title, but also placed her in the history books by surpassing a tennis legend. With this opening win, Swiatek set a record of 65 consecutive first-round wins on the WTA Tour, exceeding Monica Seles’s 64-match mark in the Open Era.

Currently ranked world No. 2, Swiatek has been in brilliant form since her first Wimbledon title a few weeks ago. Despite being underrated on grass courts, the 24-year-old reached the SW19 final, losing only one set along the way.

With her first-round win at the 2025 US Open, Swiatek now holds a streak of 65 consecutive first-round Tour-level wins (including United Cup and WTA Finals), breaking Monica Seles’s record of 64 matches (1990–1996).

In the title match, she overwhelmed Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0. Afterwards, despite a minor stumble losing to young Danish talent Clara Tauson in the round of 16 at the Canada Open, Swiatek quickly regained form and won the Cincinnati Open without dropping a set, defeating Jasmine Paolini in the final.

Now, with a first-round victory in New York and another record secured, Swiatek will face Suzan Lamens (Netherlands) in the second round as she aims for her second US Open title following her 2022 win.

Last July, Swiatek ended a 13-month title drought by winning Wimbledon—her sixth Grand Slam—before capturing the Cincinnati trophy just two weeks later. After falling to No. 8 in the WTA rankings in June, she rapidly climbed back to No. 2.

If she wins again at Flushing Meadows, Swiatek will be the first player since Serena Williams in 2012 to win both Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season—and could also reclaim the world No. 1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka.

Swiatek’s next opponent is world No. 66 Suzan Lamens, who defeated 18-year-old wildcard Valerie Glozman 6-4, 6-2. Lamens—who won her first WTA title in Osaka last October—is competing in all four Grand Slams for the first time this year, reaching at least the second round at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and now the US Open.
