Djokovic's Biggest Concern at the US Open

Novak Djokovic keeps defeating his rivals one by one at the 2025 US Open, but he himself acknowledges that his fitness is a source of concern.

Novak Djokovic advances his quest at the 2025 US Open with a victory over Cameron Norrie, but what worries fans most is the physical state of the world’s number one player. At 38 years old, Djokovic still displays top-level form, yet signs of injury and fatigue are becoming increasingly evident.

This year in New York, Djokovic has dropped a total of 2 sets in his first three matches. While he cruised past Learner Tien in the opening round, he faced tougher moments against Zachary Svajda and Cameron Norrie. During the match versus Norrie, Djokovic even requested medical time-out due to lower back pain. Nevertheless, the resilience of the 24-time Grand Slam champion helped him secure a 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3 victory, thanks to his excellent serving performance.

After the match, Djokovic was rather reserved when asked about his physical condition. He smiled and told the crowd: “Ups and downs are normal. I’m fine, still as youthful as ever.” His response eased the tension in the stadium, but just minutes later in an ESPN interview, Djokovic admitted a less optimistic truth: “Honestly, I’m worried. I’m more concerned now than ever, despite taking extremely meticulous care of my body. I spend hours on and off the court to keep fit and recover quickly, but age is something you just can’t beat.”

At 38, Djokovic constantly has to consider his physical condition during competition

Djokovic explained that he and his coaching team have had to adjust their training approach. Instead of hitting balls between matches, he prioritizes rest to allow his body to recover. “Sometimes we decide not to train more. Recovery is more important than intense practice. Maybe tomorrow I’ll just rest to be fully prepared for the next match,” Djokovic shared.

The Serbian legend also openly discussed the enormous workload he must undertake to maintain his fitness. Whereas before he focused mainly on technique and tactics, now he dedicates many extra hours to recovery methods: from physical therapy and using support devices to sleep and nutrition. “To keep up with younger players, I have to double my efforts. Every day I add a few more hours for recovery; every detail matters as the tournament progresses,” Djokovic emphasized.

He candidly acknowledged the contrast between younger players and himself: “They enter matches feeling fresh, while I feel like my fuel tank is half empty. But I will try to change that at this tournament. No matter how my body reacts, one thing is certain: I will give my all, down to the last drop of energy, to go as far as possible.”

Djokovic’s remarks evoke both concern and admiration from fans. Despite age and physical challenges being inevitable, his fighting spirit remains as strong as ever. With a proven track record spanning over a decade, the Serbian player remains a top contender for the 2025 US Open title, even as he faces his toughest opponent: his own body.
