No question about it, despite playing against the home favorite and last year’s runner-up, Djokovic overcame Fritz 3-1, accomplishing the remarkable feat of reaching all Grand Slam semifinals this season. This is Djokovic’s seventh career achievement of reaching all four Grand Slam semifinals in a single year, covering every age phase. Let’s take a look:
Age 28 (2015): Australian Open Champion, French Open Runner-up, Wimbledon Champion, US Open Champion
Age 26 (2013): Australian Open Champion, French Open Semifinalist, Wimbledon Runner-up, US Open Runner-up
Age 25 (2012): Australian Open Champion, French Open Runner-up, Wimbledon Semifinalist, US Open Runner-up
Age 24 (2011): Australian Open Champion, French Open Semifinalist, Wimbledon Champion, US Open Champion
First, the four occasions before age 30, three of which were consecutive years, marking Djokovic’s resurgence after his initial breakthrough in early 2008.
In 2011, after a three-year gap, he reclaimed Grand Slam titles with a 40+ match winning streak aiming for the trophy, but was stopped by Federer in the French Open semifinals. Still, he secured his first Wimbledon and US Open titles, leaving only the French Open title missing for a career Grand Slam.
The following year, he lost in the French Open and US Open finals to longtime rivals Nadal and Murray respectively. The US Open was Murray’s first Grand Slam title, and the Wimbledon semifinal loss to Federer was Djokovic’s last defeat to the Swiss maestro in a Grand Slam.
In 2013, Djokovic maintained strong form but lost to Nadal at the French Open and US Open, while Wimbledon once again became the stage where Murray made his breakthrough. Since then, Djokovic remained undefeated for a long period on Wimbledon’s Centre Court.
2015 was unfortunate; despite defeating the clay king, he could not overcome fate. That year, the “flashing pants” incident shattered Djokovic’s dream of a calendar Grand Slam and delayed his career Grand Slam by a year.
Age 38 (2025): Australian Open Semifinalist, French Open Semifinalist, Wimbledon Semifinalist, US Open Semifinalist
Age 36 (2023): Australian Open Champion, French Open Champion, Wimbledon Runner-up, US Open Champion
Age 34 (2021): Australian Open Champion, French Open Champion, Wimbledon Champion, US Open Runner-up
After achieving the career Grand Slam in 2016, Djokovic experienced some inconsistency despite winning several Grand Slam titles. It wasn’t until 2021, when he defeated Nadal at the French Open and won the final, that he quietly reached the peak for a calendar Grand Slam. Unfortunately, his performance was affected by the Olympics, causing him to fall just short.
Two years ago, Djokovic surprisingly lost to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final but later avenged the loss by defeating Medvedev at the US Open. Yet, even with 24 Grand Slam titles last year, the 25th title still eludes him. Will this year be his chance? Historically, every year he reached all four Grand Slam semifinals, he won at least one title!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Luo Cheng Qiye)
