Jannik Sinner didn’t have to struggle much to keep his title defense alive at the US Open this year.
The current world number one, Jannik Sinner, comfortably beat compatriot Lorenzo Musetti 3-0 (6-1; 6-4; 6-2) in the US Open 2025 quarterfinals held this morning on September 4th, Vietnam time.
Before the match, Sinner was heavily favored and expected to have a quick and easy game. The reigning US Open champion’s powerful and deep shots greatly limited Musetti’s one-handed backhand, a shot that has brought him much success on clay courts rather than hard surfaces. The 2025 Monte Carlo Masters runner-up also lacked effective tactics to trouble Sinner, leading to his disadvantage in long rallies.
In the first set, Sinner showed complete dominance. Musetti, tense and nervous, couldn’t withstand the fierce and precise shots from his compatriot, making many errors and losing two service games, resulting in a heavy 6-1 defeat.
In the second set, Sinner lowered his intensity and committed more errors but remained very alert to seize opportunities to finish the match. Musetti even had a break-point chance but failed to capitalize, eventually losing the crucial service game and the set 4-6.
Musetti’s troubles increased as he lost a break at the very first game of the third set. Although he fought hard afterward and earned six break-point chances, the one-handed backhand player couldn’t score against Sinner’s exceptional composure. The world number one even broke another service game from his compatriot, winning the set 6-2 and securing a commanding 3-0 victory to reach the US Open 2025 semifinals.
Sinner’s next opponent will be Felix Auger-Aliassime, who defeated Alex De Minaur in four sets. “FAA” has returned strongly this year at Flushing Meadows with his ultimate weapon: a forehand that feels better than ever, expected to pose a tough challenge for Sinner in their upcoming encounter.
