"Will the 'Drake Curse' affect Sinner's bid to defend his US Open title?"

At the 2025 US Open, Jannik Sinner's title defense was widely expected to proceed smoothly—the 24-year-old Italian was in excellent form, dropping only one set in his first four matches, and dominating 17th seed Bublik in the fourth round in just 81 minutes without losing a single service game, confidently advancing to the quarterfinals. The general consensus favored a third Grand Slam final showdown this season between him and Alcaraz, continuing their peak rivalry history.

However, an unexpected piece of news cast a shadow over his chances of winning the title:

CanadaRap superstar Drakehas placed a $300,000 bet on Sinner, wagering that he will claim his fifth Grand Slam title in New York. This move attracted attention due to the well-known "Drake Curse" in sports—the singer's large bets often predict the opposite outcome for the players he supports.

The so-called "Drake Curse" originates from Drake's long history of publicly placing bets. According to TheDrakeCurse.com, a site tracking his wagers, he has made 80 high-profile bets totaling $35.2 million with returns of $36.17 million, appearing slightly profitable overall. Yet, with 57 losses out of 90 bets, the saying "favored by Drake = likely to lose" has become widespread. His worst loss was in 2022, when he wagered over $1.59 million on UFC fighter Adesanya to win, only to lose everything.

Sinner is one of the few tennis players Drake has bet on, and their "story" is quite dramatic. Before last year's US Open final, Drake bet $210,000 on Fritz to beat Sinner, but Sinner won straight sets, causing Drake to lose that bet. This year, at the Australian Open final, he bet $250,000 on Sinner to defeat Zverev, successfully winning $345,000. Despite a net loss of $115,000 over these two bets, Drake clearly favors Sinner and has now placed another $300,000 wager, hoping Sinner's title defense will reverse his fortunes.

For Sinner, this bet is a double-edged sword—on one side, public support from a music superstar (previously, singer H.E.R. also openly cheered for him), and on the other, the invisible pressure from the "curse." Whether he can overcome the "curse" and maintain his defending momentum remains another suspenseful storyline at the US Open.
