Tennis legend speaks frankly about the Alcaraz - Sinner showdown

Ahead of the 2025 US Open final, former world No.1 Mats Wilander insists that the clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner is far from boring and is actually elevating men's tennis to a new level.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are set to contest their third consecutive Grand Slam final at this Sunday’s US Open. However, some, including former world No.1 Mats Wilander, have questioned whether this matchup is becoming repetitive and dull.

Previously, at the Roland Garros final in June, Alcaraz saved a match point and staged a remarkable comeback to defeat his biggest rival. Just weeks later, Sinner avenged that loss by beating Alcaraz to claim his first Wimbledon title. Now, the two best players in the world face off again for the US Open trophy.

According to legend Wilander, sports fans are not tired of seeing this duo repeatedly appear in major finals.

“I don’t find it boring, because every time Sinner and Alcaraz meet in a final, I always look forward to something special”, Wilander affirmed.

He explained that what sets Sinner and Alcaraz apart from the rest of men’s tennis is their all-around game and revolutionary style of play.

“About 2-3 years ago, Daniil Medvedev was considered the best hard court player. But compared to the speed and pace Sinner is playing with now, the difference is huge. He doesn’t wait for the ball; he constantly attacks and puts pressure on his opponent. Alcaraz is the same. He never waits but charges every shot, leaving opponents no time to rest”, Wilander analyzed.

The former world No.1 further compared: “Compared to Tsitsipas, Zverev, or Medvedev, who often wait for the ball before reacting, Sinner and Alcaraz play aggressively and relentlessly attack. They maintain that high intensity throughout, and until someone can match that level, they will be extremely hard to beat.”

Wilander also stated that the Roland Garros final between Alcaraz and Sinner earlier this year was the highest level of tennis he has ever witnessed, even surpassing the peak eras of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.

“In terms of quality, tennis has never been played at such a high standard as in this year’s Roland Garros final”, Wilander emphasized.
