Deminair replaces Tiafoe to compete in the Laver Cup

Alex Deminair has joined the World Team lineup for this year’s Laver Cup, replacing American Frances Tiafoe. The event is scheduled from September 19 to 21 at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Deminair made his debut for the World Team at the 2022 Laver Cup. That year, the World Team clinched their first championship in London (with the Big Four assembled and Federer retiring), and then successfully defended the title in Vancouver in 2023. This year, the World Team will be led by Andre Agassi, who takes over as captain from John McEnroe.

“I’m truly honored to join the World Team under Captain Agassi next week in San Francisco,” Deminair said, holding a 1-0 record in this competition. “My first Laver Cup experience in London in 2022 was unforgettable, and I’m ready to give my all to help the team lift the Laver Cup at the Chase Center.”

Currently, the World Team roster includes three American players: Taylor Fritz, Alex Mickelson, and Reilly Opelka, along with Australian Deminair, Brazilian rising star João Fonseca, and Argentine Francisco Cerundolo.

“We will miss Frances’ energy and performance on the San Francisco court,” Agassi said, “but we’re thrilled to welcome a world-class player in top form to the team. I’ve always admired Alex’s playing style and competitive spirit, and I’m excited to see him perform up close.”

Deminair’s record this season stands at 41 wins and 16 losses. In the last eight Grand Slam tournaments, he reached the quarterfinals six times, including this year’s Australian Open and US Open. In July, he secured his first title of the season at the Washington ATP 500 event.
