On October 7th, 2025, the Wuhan Open reached its second day of the main draw. Zhang Shuai, the only Chinese player competing in singles today, overcame 14th seed Navarro with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory, repeating her win against Navarro from last year’s China Open and claiming her first Wuhan Open win after a seven-year gap. Facing a 0-3 deficit in the deciding set, Zhang rallied strongly by delivering a “golden duck” game to turn the match around. In the second round, she will face Romanian player Kostia, who advanced after Ostapenko retired while trailing 0-6, 1-2.

After the match, Zhang reviewed the game, saying: “My opponent is very strong, and her performance has been consistently high over the past two years, so I’m very happy with my own performance. Even when I was down 0-3 in the third set, I remained calm and motivated. (After losing eight consecutive games) It was mostly due to myself; the heat and humidity made me sweat a lot, which caused me to feel a bit disoriented and make errors when raising my hand. I’m glad I managed to adjust before the match ended and saved this match.”
Swiatek (Photo: Tournament Provided)
Making her night session debut, six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek defeated Czech player Buzkova 6-1, 6-1, reaching 60 wins this season. She will await the winner between Mertens and Bencic in the third round. The 5th seed Andreyeva was upset in a three-hour battle against German veteran Siegemund, losing 7-6(4), 3-6, 3-6. Siegemund earned her third top-10 win of the season and advanced to the round of 16.
China Open runner-up Noskova fought through three sets to beat qualifier Putintseva 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2), completing a season sweep of their encounters. She will face former world No.1 Osaka in the second round, who came back from behind to defeat Fernandez 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, securing her first career win at Wuhan Open.
Muskova (Photo: Tournament Provided)
12th seed Muskova overcame Ukrainian player Kostyuk 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, repeating her victory from this year’s US Open and earning her first career win at Wuhan Open. In the second round, she will meet Polish player Frech, who battled through 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to defeat Kudermetova. Former US Open champion Raducanu retired while trailing 1-6, 1-4 against Ann Li, who will face 9th seed Aleksandrova in the next round.
