Djokovic struggles but reaches the quarterfinals of the 2025 Shanghai Masters
Novak Djokovic needed more time than anticipated to defeat Jaume Munar in the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters this year.
On the evening of October 7th, Vietnam time, during the round of 16 at the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters 2025, Novak Djokovic secured a hard-fought victory against Spanish player Jaume Munar. At 38 years old, the Serbian player competed under 84% humidity and suffered a left ankle injury after slipping early in the first set.
After breaking serve in the fourth game, Djokovic encountered trouble rushing to the net and required medical assistance. Despite the pain and fatigue, he maintained his fighting spirit and won the first set 6-3.
In the second set, Djokovic faced challenges due to the demanding conditions in Shanghai, while his opponent, known as one of the most resilient players in the top ranks, remained steady. Despite enthusiastic support from the Chinese crowd waving Serbian flags, Munar calmly waited for his chance and broke serve in the twelfth game to even the match by taking the set 7-5.
Djokovic fell to the court and lay still for a few seconds before getting up. Just when it seemed the match might slip away from him, the Grand Slam record holder showed his iron will, broke serve immediately in the first game of the third set, then broke again in the seventh game, finishing the match with a 2-1 victory (6-3; 5-7; 6-2).
After the match, Djokovic shouted in Chinese: "Thank you, thank you everyone, I love you all!" which ignited the arena in Shanghai.
With many top seeds already out early, this is a prime opportunity for Djokovic to claim his first ATP 1000 title in nearly two years, as well as his fifth championship in Shanghai. His quarterfinal opponent will be Belgian player Zizou Bergs.
