Djokovic advanced to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on Tuesday, overcoming the dual challenges of weather and his physical state in a hard-fought win. This achievement made the Serbian legend the oldest ATP Masters quarterfinalist ever, surpassing Federer’s previous record by roughly two months.
On Tuesday, Djokovic faced Munar under the scorching Shanghai sun, just two days after vomiting during his match against Hanfmann. The intense heat in China this week has been unbearable for many players, and Djokovic was no exception.
In the first set, the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s situation worsened when he strained his calf muscle during a run, forcing him to call for a medical timeout. Although he managed to win the first set, the combination of high temperatures, physical exhaustion, and Munar’s stubborn defense nearly broke the fourth seed in the second set.
At one point in the second set, losing his temper, he shouted at his coach Boris Boshnjokovic, “What are you looking at, idiot?” This moment was captured by the media.
Meanwhile, the Serbian tennis king vomited again on court—marking the second consecutive day he experienced this during a match. To make matters worse, the 38-year-old veteran also suffered a new injury during the game.
This year’s Shanghai Masters has been dominated by two main topics: court speed and the extreme heat. The former had little effect on Djokovic, but the latter clearly caused him great distress.
During the previous round’s three-set battle against Hanfmann, the world number four vomited mid-match, showing signs of rare physical exhaustion. Speaking about the weather in the post-match press conference, he said: “I’ve said before, these conditions are the same for every player on court, but they are truly brutal. Humidity has been over 80% for several days, which is extremely tough for the players. Especially when playing during the day under the blazing sun and high temperatures, it feels incredibly harsh. But that’s the reality—you just have to adapt.”
Although he lost the second set in a tough fight, Djokovic regrouped after a brief medical timeout and sealed the match with a 6-2 win in the deciding set, advancing smoothly to the next round. Fans had expected him to share his thoughts at the press conference, but reports say the world number four skipped media interviews due to physical discomfort and also declined on-court interviews. The tournament doctor advised him to skip the press conference to rest and recover.
Having reached the quarterfinals, Djokovic will face Berrettini in the next round. Berrettini is making his first Masters quarterfinal appearance, having previously defeated Ruud and then eliminated Diallo on Tuesday.
Djokovic is currently chasing his 101st career title, and with the top three players already out, the Shanghai Masters presents an excellent opportunity. World number one Alcaraz withdrew due to injury, number two Sinner retired mid-match because of cramps, and number three Zverev was defeated by Lindgren.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
