Shocking and disheartening, suffering four consecutive losses after winning the championship, Mboko still has a long journey ahead.

Typically, winning a championship and achieving a new career milestone brings increased confidence to a tennis player. This confidence usually leads to better performances on the court thereafter. Yet, exceptions do occur. For instance, a player who recently made a breakthrough by winning a tour title ended up suffering four consecutive losses after their victory. So, who is this player? And what exactly happened? Let this article take you through the story.

This tennis player is Canadian Mboko. At the start of the 2025 season, she claimed five ITF titles and broke into the world’s top 200 rankings for the first time. Perhaps even she did not expect that this was only the beginning of her breakthroughs in the 2025 season.

In early March, as a wildcard, she battled through three sets to defeat Colombian Osorio, a former tour champion, at the WTA1000 Miami event. Notably, this marked Mboko’s first career win over a top 100 player. Later, at Wimbledon, she earned her first Grand Slam victory, followed by her first consecutive Grand Slam wins and reached the round of 32 in a major for the first time.

By the end of July, she secured a seven-match winning streak at the WTA1000 Montreal tournament, capturing her first WTA1000 title. Due to these numerous breakthroughs in 2025, many media outlets and fans believed Mboko was on the path to stardom.

At the end of August, she appeared as a seeded player at the Grand Slam in New York’s Flushing Meadows for the first time. In the US Open first round, Mboko faced Czech player Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam champion. Given Mboko’s recent WTA1000 title, both bookmakers and fans favored her to win. However, she managed only five games throughout the match, which was a clear defeat.

In late September, Mboko competed at the China Open. As a seeded player, she received a first-round bye. In the second round, she faced Russian Potapova, who had won a tour title this season and demonstrated strong ability. Although Mboko pushed her opponent to a tiebreak, she ultimately lost, extending her losing streak.

In October, Mboko arrived at the WTA1000 Wuhan tournament. In the opening round, she played against Russian Aleksandrova, who had reached three tour finals and won one title this season. Despite giving her all, Mboko only secured five games in the match. After this loss, she had unknowingly fallen into a three-match losing streak following her championship win.

This week, she participated in the WTA500 Ningbo Open. In the first round, Mboko faced Ukrainian Yastremska, who had previously reached a Grand Slam semifinal and possessed considerable skill. Yastremska defeated Mboko in straight sets.

Although Mboko has suffered four consecutive losses after her championship, she is still under twenty years old and has a long future ahead. It is believed that she will regain her form and achieve good results in upcoming competitions. That’s the tennis story for today; more to come tomorrow.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Yixin Jushi)
